Activist strikes blow for midgets

An average day at the grocery store for Rhode Island mom, Michelle Martinka, turned into a moment of activism when she noticed that Cains Pickles, a popular New England brand, produced a line called “Kosher Dill Midgets.”

Martinka is the mother of ten-month-old Adelaide, a little girl with a form of dwarfism known as Achondroplasia—and “midget” is a derogatory way of referencing those born with the condition.

No, let's just stop right there.  I doubt the usual use of the word "midget" was meant in a derogatory fashion.

However, if you've somehow decided you're a "victim" (and you're an idiot-lib) then it's only natural to try to find ways to "make a difference."   And for the completely uninspired, the usual answer is to walk around harrumphing and pretending you changed something by changing a word

Juan Williams Caught Plagiarizing, Takes Full Blame.

Figures if he stuffs enough "research" under his arm, nobody will be able to figure out what's his and what's plagiarized. If it weren't for the confounded internet, his plan would have succeeded.

Well, not full blame. He didn't want to be greedy. He let his "researcher" share in that glory.

In a phone interview Thursday evening, Williams pinned the blame on a researcher who he described as a “young man.”

“I was writing a column about the immigration debate and had my researcher look around to see what data existed to pump up this argument and he sent back what I thought were his words and summaries of the data,” Williams told Salon. “I had never seen the CAP report myself, so I didn’t know that the young man had in fact not summarized the data but had taken some of the language from the CAP report.”

In other words, and according to his "logic" he asked the "researcher" to find data and when he gave him that data, he no longer thought it was data but his summaries of the data and so he copied it word for word as if it were his own work. Yep. Classic Lib tactic. If you can take enough steps away from the dog poop, you never stepped in it. Of course, only Libs fall for that nonsense.

The Colorado Coalition Against Gun Violence

Never heard of them? Can't find their website? Limited referencing of their name outside of Sen. Hudak (D) and her condescending scolding of Amanda Collins? Strange, right?

A Colorado state senator has come under fire for remarks she made to a rape victim at a committee hearing Monday on a bill that would ban concealed weapons on public college campuses.

Sen. Evie Hudak, a Democrat from Westminster, Colo., criticized testimony provided by Amanda Collins, 27, who said that the attack on her at University of Nevada, Reno, may have been avoided had she been allowed to carry a gun on campus, The Denver Post reported.

"I just want to say that, actually, statistics are not on your side even if you had a gun," Hudak told Collins during the hearing, according to the report. "And chances are that if you would have had a gun, then he would have been able to get that from you and possibly use it against you."

Hudak cited statistical data compiled by the Colorado Coalition Against Gun Violence, claiming that for every woman who used a handgun to kill someone in self-defense, 83 were murdered by their own weapon, The Post reported.

That is *not* what the Post reported. The post reported what Ms. Hudak actually said which was, "The Colorado Coalition Against Gun Violence says that for every one woman who used a handgun to kill someone in self-defense, 83 were murdered by them."

What I'm wondering is what she actually meant by that because to me, it sounds like these dubious statistics coming from a spurious source are more of a convenience than actual science. Due to the lack of detail in her statement, it's entirely possible that she used total gun deaths to contrast gun deaths during a sexual assault. It is also possible that she's using statistics where the attacker was armed but the victim was not during a sexual assault.

However since she is not specific, and since it's as hard to find a reference to "The Colorado Coalition Against Gun Violence" as it is to find references to Afrighting Laws without Scalia being mentioned.

There's another mention of this phenomenon but the blogger who talks about it is unavailable for comment due to his Iron Curtain security preventing any sort of comment or contact. (23,169 comments successfully blocked and counting).

Shhhhh, you're in the presence of genius

A Florida legislator wants anyone trying to buy ammunition to complete an anger management program first, in what critics say is the latest example of local lawmakers reaching for constitutionally-dubious solutions to the problem of gun violence.

The bill filed Saturday by state Sen. Audrey Gibson, D-Jacksonville, would require a three-day waiting period for the sale of any firearm and the sale of ammunition to anyone who has not completed anger management courses. The proposal would require ammo buyers to take the anger management courses every 10 years.

And then the kicker ... yes, all the genius-libs of today can't resist lecturing with "it's not about _____, it's about ______."

“This is not about guns," Gibson said. "This is about ammunition and not only for the safety of the general community, but also for the safety of law enforcement.” More here:

Baltimore, MD (KTNV) -- A student in Baltimore was suspended over breakfast.

7-year-old Josh Welch was eating a Pop-Tart at school. A teacher saw the pastry and said she thought it looked like it was being shaped into a gun.

The teacher also said she heard Welch say, "Bang Bang" while he was holding it.

Oh woe is us ... the government doesn't have enough money

(CNSNews.com) – Federal revenue will return to its pre-recession levels in 2013, according to projections from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), setting a record for the most money the government has ever taken in.

In its latest Budget and Economic Update, the CBO forecasts that federal revenue will top $2.7 trillion in 2013, slightly higher than the $2.6 trillion the government collected in 2007, when the last recession officially began.

In the "What was I thinking?" department

HARTFORD, Conn. –  A state lawmaker has issued an apology and been stripped of his leadership title over what some perceived as a lewd remark to a 17-year-old girl on the House floor.

State Rep. Ernest Hewett made reference to "a snake" under his desk as he addressed the girl at a budget hearing last week. He has said his remark came out wrong and he understands how it could be misconstrued.

The girl, a high school senior, had been testifying in support of funding for the Connecticut Science Center's youth programs, which she said helped her to get over a fear of snakes. One lawmaker told her she was a good spokeswoman for the center and asked if there were any questions.

"If you're bashful I got a snake sitting under my desk here," Hewett then said. Laughter at his remark from those in the room is heard in an audio tape of the exchange.

Oops, that "came out wrong.:"  Yes, yes, it was just a Freudian slip.

Hewett, a five-term Democrat from New London, said his words did not come out as intended. He told The Day of New London, "What I meant to say was, if you are shy then I have an acre of land in the Everglades." More here:

Think about that. Worst case? That a government drowning in debt should cut back by 2.2 percent — and the country survives. That a government now borrowing 35 cents of every dollar it spends reduces that borrowing by two cents “and nothing bad really happens.” Oh, the humanity!

A normal citizen might think this a good thing. For reactionary liberalism, however, whatever sum our ever-inflating government happens to spend today (now double what Bill Clinton spent in his last year) is the Platonic ideal — the reduction of which, however minuscule, is a national calamity.

Or damn well should be. Otherwise, people might get the idea that we can shrink government and live on.

Hence the president’s message. If the “sequestration” — automatic spending cuts — goes into effect, the skies will fall. Plane travel jeopardized, carrier groups beached, teachers furloughed. And a shortage of junk-touching TSA agents.

The Obama administration has every incentive to make the sky fall, lest we suffer that terrible calamity — cuts the nation survives. Happy ending, feel-good story of the week

The trouble began around 8 p.m. on Thursday while the family was baking a cake. They were interrupted from the task by a knock on the door, KHOU News is reporting.

“I see a young boy and I think it is a friend of my son so I open it a little bit,” the father recalled while talking to the station. 

“These guys push and out comes two more, they push me on the ground.”

The suspects reportedly went after the mother of the family while the father was knocked down, as the son ran to get his father’s gun. Once he retrieved it, he  fatally shot one of the invaders.

The other two suspects then fled the scene.

After they ran away, authorities from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office were called to the scene. Soon after, the other two suspects were found and taken into the custody, the station learned. More here:

A customer enters the Lake City Grocery Outlet. The store is struggling because of a significant increase in theft. The increase is blamed on Seattle's plastic bag ban and a concentration of inebriates and drug users in the neighborhood.

LOL - "... the ban on plastic and a concentration of inebriates and drug users ..."

My comment?  They left out "criminals."

When the Seattle City Council unanimously passed a ban on plastic bags and required businesses to charge a nickel for paper bags, city leaders believed it would be better all around.

I love it when some asshats with temporary power the government "requires" things.

"I think we've gotten to a place where it's really going to work for the environment, businesses and the community in general," Councilman Mike O'Brien said at the time.

I love how these jackasses toss the word "we" around.  Hey, councilman, I think "we've" gotten to a place where "we" need to punish tyrants ... ever thought about that?

But the bag ban is contributing to thousands of dollars in losses for at least one Seattle grocery store, and questions have been raised about the risk of food-borne illness from reusable bags that shoppers don't often wash. More here:

Politically Correct Police strike again

Has Joan Rivers gone too far (again)? 

The comedian has sparked controversy over a joke she made about Heidi Klum in a sexy Julien Macdonald dress at Elton John's AIDS Foundation Academy Awards party. 

"The last time a German looked this hot was when they were pushing Jews into the ovens," Rivers said of the German-born supermodel on Monday's episode of E!'s Fashion Police. 

The Anti-Defamation League's director Abraham H. Foxman, a Holocaust survivor himself, said in a statement that the comments were "vulgar and offensive to Jews and Holocaust survivors." 

The anti-Semitism watchdog group also criticized Rivers' Fashion Police co-hosts Giuliana Rancic, Kelly Osborne and George Kotsiopoulos, whom the statement says were "doubled over with laughter" after she made the joke. 

When asked for comment, Rivers, who is Jewish herself, told The Hollywood Reporter, "My husband lost the majority of his family at Auschwitz, and I can assure you that I have always made it a point to remind people of the Holocaust through humor." From here:
