S.F. Cancels Halloween Street Party

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The hundreds of thousands of people who usually flock to an annual Halloween street party here are being warned to stay home or go elsewhere after several episodes of violence in recent years.

City officials have advised would-be revelers through fliers, public service announcements and juvenile probation officers that they won't find many treats in the Castro District, home in past years to the largest Halloween happening in the San Francisco Bay area.

What they will find are hundreds of extra police officers, shuttered restaurants, stepped up sobriety checks and no bus or train service after 8:30 p.m.

"This is really a public safety decision," said Supervisor Bevan Dufty, who represents the Castro and spent the better part of a year trying to arrange an alternative city-sanctioned gathering. "I'm disappointed my message is one of, 'Please don't come.'"

The festivities started decades ago as a homegrown celebration for San Francisco's gay and lesbian community, but has drawn a scarier element in recent years. In 2002, five people were stabbed. WASHINGTON — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada has been derided for saying that global warming contributed to last week’s wildfires in Southern California.

Conservative political blogs mocked him. Skeptics complained he was using a natural disaster to push his party’s energy agenda. The Nevada Republican Party said Reid had “lost touch with reality.”

On Tuesday the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming announced a hearing:

“A Spark Neglected: Wildfires and Global Warming,” it labeled the proceedings scheduled for Thursday.

“Select committee to examine link between changing climate, frequency and intensity of wildfires,” the description continued.

A committee spokesman said the hearing “was prompted by the wildfires out West and the view of some scientists that the increasing size, frequency and intensity of these fires is affected adversely by global warming.” A panel of scientists will testify.

In case you didn't know -- Harry Reid -- DIMOCRAT -- announced the fires were caused by global warming -- and then quickly backpedaled on the issue when confronted about it -- but now he's going to have hearings -- oh jeeeezus.

Kids at the 257-pupil primary have also been told to don ethnic garb even though most are Christians.

The morning assembly will be open to all parents – but dads are BARRED from a women-only party in the afternoon because Muslim husbands object to wives mixing with other men.

Just two members of staff – a part-time teacher and a teaching assistant – are Muslim.

Yesterday a relative of one of the 39 others said: “Staff have got to go along with it – or let’s face it, they would be branded racist. Yes -- everyone must go along quietly or risk the witch-label.

“Who would put their job on the line? They have been told they have to embrace the day to show their diversity. But they are not all happy.”

The day aims to belatedly mark Eid, the end of Ramadan.

Sally Bloomer, head of Rufford primary school in Lye, West Midlands, insisted: “I have not heard of any complaints.

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (AP) - A prosecutor will be asked to consider the case of a boy accused of starting a massive wildfire by playing with matches.

Fueled by ferocious desert winds, the fire quickly spread, burning more than 38,000 acres and destroying 21 homes.

The boy, whose name and age were not released, admitted to sparking the fire on Oct. 21, Los Angeles County sheriff's Sgt. Diane Hecht said Tuesday.

"He admitted to playing with matches and accidentally starting the fire," she said in a statement. More here:

French President Nicolas Sarkozy walked out of an interview with US CBS television news show 60 minutes, according to a clip of the show released Sunday in advance of the interview's airing.
A clearly disturbed Sarkozy stood up muttering in French about the question, which was not heard, in a short publicity clip put on the Internet ahead of the 60 Minutes broadcast Sunday night.

"You asked me that question," Sarkozy seems to say as he pulls off the microphone, stands up and walks away from the interviewer, who appears confused.

Sarkozy, whose office announced October 18 that he had divorced his wife Cecilia, is known to be particularly prickly about questions on his personal life.

He is also shown in the clip for the segment entitled "Sarko L'Americain" saying, "What an idiot," in apparent reference to his own press secretary.

"He's smart, energetic and tempestuous," the 60 Minutes clip said in promoting the show.

It was not clear when the CBS interview was conducted.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy showed flashes of temper and abruptly terminated a television interview aimed at introducing him to US audiences. (Get that folks? Walking out on no-class jackass is now a "flash of temper.")

In the 60 Minutes interview, broadcast in the US on Sunday, the French president sparred with the reporter, called his press secretary an imbecile, said he was too busy to make time for a "stupid" interview and ended the whole conversation abruptly when asked about the state of his marriage to Cecilia.

The Sarkozys' divorce was announced about two weeks later.

"If I had something to say about Cecilia, I would not do so here," he said before cutting off further questions.

In two interviews, a brief one aboard a plane and a more formal one several weeks ago, he expressed his admiration for both the US work ethic and its pop music.

Asked about his father's fears years ago that anyone with a Hungarian last name like Sarkozy could not succeed in France, he said one thing he admires about the US democracy is its openness and opportunities to all kinds of people.

"You can be called Schwarzenegger and be governor of California," he said.

Governmental Email Screw-Up

For $25/hour, they could have hired a geek who actually knows something about email: House Panel Screw-Up Reveals Whistleblower Email Addresses.

This summer the House Judiciary Committee launched an effort to collect tips from would-be whistleblowers in the Justice Department. The U.S. attorney firings scandal had shown that much was amiss in the Department, and with the danger of retaliation very real, the committee had set up a form on the committee's website for people to blow the whistle privately about abuses there. Although the panel said it would not accept anonymous tips, it assured those who came forward that their identity would be held in the "strictest confidence."

But in an email sent out today, the committee inadvertently sent the email addresses of all the would-be whistleblowers to everyone who had written in to the tipline. The committee email was sent to tipsters who had used the website form, including presumably whistleblowers themselves, and all of the recipients of the email were accidentally included in the "to:" field -- instead of concealing those addresses with a so-called blind carbon copy or "bcc:".

And then...

The committee later sent out a second email attempting to recall the original email; it, too, included all recipients in the "to:" field, according to a recipient of the emails.

Cheney's email address was also on the list.

The Bush administration and New York cut a deal Saturday to create a new generation of super-secure driver's licenses for U.S. citizens, but also allow illegal immigrants to get a version.

Holy Smoke man - no hummer is worth that.

ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia's Supreme Court on Friday ordered the release of a young man who has been imprisoned for more than two years for having consensual oral sex with another teenager.

The court ruled 4-3 that Genarlow Wilson's 10-year sentence was cruel and unusual punishment.

Wilson, 21, was convicted of aggravated child molestation following a 2003 New Year's Eve party at a Douglas County hotel room where he was videotaped having oral sex with a 15-year-old girl. He was 17 at the time.

Wilson was acquitted of raping another 17-year-old girl at the party.

The 1995 law Wilson violated was changed in 2006 to make oral sex between teens close in age a misdemeanor, similar to the law regarding teen sexual intercourse. But the state Supreme Court later upheld a lower court's ruling which said that the 2006 law could not be applied retroactively.

Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears wrote in the majority opinion that the changes in the law "represent a seismic shift in the legislature's view of the gravity of oral sex between two willing teenage participants." More here:

Authorities Investigating Disturbing Crime in Merced County

10/24/2007 - The sheriff's department says a young woman was found burned and barely alive Wednesday morning. Investigators believe the victim was kidnapped from a home in Turlock, and driven across the county line to a field in Ballico.

Merced County sheriff's investigators say the woman was tied up and burned alive about a half a mile down the road. But she managed to walk to a farm where workers found her and called 911.
The men were taking a quick break from their work in the field when they saw what they thought was a Halloween decoration laying on the ground.

"At first I think it's something like plastic, or for Halloween, but when I got close, I see the face nasty, the body nasty, and then I see that it's a person," said one of the workers.

The man, who asked us not to use his name, says he cried when he realized he was looking at a woman who was burned beyond recognition. Still in shock, the men called 911.

Deputy Paul Barile, Merced County Sheriff's Department, says "They told the dispatch center they found a burnt body that was partially restrained."

Deputy Barile says investigators believe the 27 year old victim was brought to this Ballico orchard after being kidnapped in Tulare. They say the suspects tied her up, doused her with gasoline, set her on fire, and left her for dead. But amazingly, the woman survived.

"Apparently after the suspects had left her body, she was able to get out of the restraints or the restraints were burned through," says Deputy Barile.

Deputy Barile says the woman was able to free her feet, but her hands were still tied as she walked to the nearby farm where she collapsed. When emergency crews arrived they flew her to a burn center in the Bay Area.

Ok -- someone tell me why we can't allow"cruel and unusual" punishment for crimes like this. And don't say "it's unconstitutional." I want to know why it has been banned.

It seems to me you can have a law that says "if you deliberately set fire to someone, we're going to torture you slowly for a minimum of 24 hours (one-hour per day) and then kill you at the end of it."

I'm guessing the answer (if any) is going to be the "slippery slope" argument -- and I haven't given it enough thought yet to disagree -- but I shall study it soon.

It will be interesting to see the New York Times try to wiggle an excuse to get out of the consequences of this, if they even have the decency to try. It will be interesting to watch the backlash and the apologists. It is interesting, but sadly not shocking.

This doesn’t need much added to it:

Every major daily paper in New York took note of President Bush’s decision to bestow the first Medal of Honor of Operation Enduring Freedom on Navy SEAL Lt. Michael Murphy - a Long Islander who gave his life for his country and his fellow SEALs.

Every paper but one, that is.

And it shouldn’t be particularly hard to guess which one.

Indeed, it wasn’t hard to guess. Every chance they get to reveal our secrets to the enemy, they have delivered. Every chance they get to destroy moral, report negatively on the war efforts, or defame our troops, they go page one. I stand with the New York Post in awarding the Times the Medal of Dis-honer.

What do you think the New York Times focus on instead?

What did the paper of record focus on yesterday? No fewer than three stories reported on how Americans had killed innocent Iraqi civilians.

The man died in the service of his country, receives one of its top commendations and the NY Times impugns him by turning their back on his life story. Well, that will create a backlash as most Americans will now be returning the favor to the NY Times and turn their backs on it. I would bet this just may be the moment the NY Times went out of business. Optimistic? Harsh? I’m not so sure. How else do you honor the man and all those who died or were injured fighting for us? Even if you don’t agree with the war or how we got in it, most people would find this an even worse infraction in simple human decency. You honor them by making clear the contempt and disgust we hold for such a petty act. And no pretend excuse will save them from their just desserts. In fact it may make the matter even worse.

House Passes Bill Intended to Prevent 'Homegrown Terrorism'

H.R. 1955 creates (but does not fund) a national commission to examine the causes of violent radicalization and homegrown terrorism and propose recommendations and legislative strategies for mitigating these threats, the sponsors said.

It also establishes a Center of Excellence for the Prevention of Radicalization and Home Grown Terrorism that's supposed to study the social, criminal, political, psychological and economic roots of the problem.

Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) called the legislation vital: "We simply don't know how many 'would-be terrorists' are living right next door," he said in a news release.

"Now we will have the ability to analyze our and other nations' experience with this critical issue, propose and adopt recommendations for a safer America, and also protect civil rights and liberties of U.S. Citizens."

Another sponsor, Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.), said the threat of a "'Made in the USA' suicide bomber" has never been greater:

"This bill, though not a silver bullet, will help develop a better understanding of the root causes of homegrown terrorism, and the steps we can take to stop it," she said.

"We must intervene before a person crosses the line separating radical views from violent behavior, create an environment that discourages disillusionment and alienation, and instill in young people a sense of belonging and faith in the future."

JERUSALEM (AP) - Israeli military experts have formulated a plan to gradually cut off electricity and fuel to the Gaza Strip in response to ongoing rocket fire from the Palestinian area, defense officials said Wednesday.

Israel provides more than half of Gaza's electricity, and any power cutoff is sure to make life more difficult for residents of the already impoverished territory. The move is also certain to draw harsh international condemnation.

The plan was formulated by a team headed by Matan Vilnai, Israel's deputy defense minister, and is expected to be approved by Defense Minister Ehud Barak on Thursday, the Israeli officials said. But it is not yet clear when the decision would take effect, they said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to divulge details of the planned cutoff to the press.

"It's clear that we have to cut off ... the supply of electricity and the supply of fuel," Vilnai told Army Radio. "We will dramatically reduce the flow of electricity from Israel over several weeks."

Israel's government last month declared Gaza a "hostile territory," clearing the way for Israel to impose sanctions. That decision followed the June takeover of the territory by the Islamic militants of Hamas and constant rocket fire by Gaza militants at towns in southern Israel.

Israel has severely restricted the flow of cargo and people through Gaza's borders since its seizure by Hamas, which Israel, the U.S. and the European Union consider a terrorist group.

Alaa Araj, an economic adviser to Gaza's Hamas government, said the Israeli measure was a violation of human rights that would hurt the entire population.

"Society will be drawn into darkness and daily life will be crippled," Araj said.

Israel can expect international criticism if it moves ahead with the move.

NEW DELHI: A senior government official died Sunday after falling from a balcony during an attack by wild monkeys at his home in the Indian capital, media reported.

New Delhi Deputy Mayor S.S. Bajwa was rushed to a hospital after the attack by the gang of Rhesus macaques, but quickly succumbed to head injuries sustained in his fall, the Press Trust of India news agency and The Times of India reported.

Many government buildings, temples and residential neighborhoods in New Delhi are overrun by Rhesus macaques which scare passers-by and occasionally bite or snatch food from unsuspecting visitors.

Last year, the Delhi High Court reprimanded city authorities for failing to stop the animals from terrifying residents and asked them to find a permanent solution to the monkey menace.

Part of the problem is that devout Hindus believe monkeys are manifestations of the monkey god Hanuman and feed them bananas and peanuts — encouraging them to frequent public places.

I'm starting to think you can replace the word "devout" with "dumbass" in most contexts.

The Senate voted Thursday to kill a $1 million grant for a museum on the site of the 1969 Woodstock concert, a rare rebuke of a legislative pet project and a blow to the presidential candidate who backed it, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Clinton and her New York colleague, Sen. Charles Schumer, had the funding inserted into the $604 billion education and health spending bill. The Woodstock project's main backer, Alan Gerry, is a registered Republican who recently became a major contributor to the Schumer-led Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

Why would Clinton and Schumer want to waste taxpayer money on something like this?

Nine days after the "earmark" was placed in the bill in June, Gerry and his wife contributed the maximum of $9,200 to Clinton's primary and general election campaign funds. The Gerry family contributed an additional $20,000 to the Democratic Senatorial (Schumer) Campaign Committee, USA TODAY reported Wednesday.

A burglar in Montgomery chose the wrong family to mess with, literally. Adrian and Tiffany McKinnon returned home on Tuesday after a week away to find that thieves had emptied almost everything the family of five owned, Tiffany McKinnon said through tears. "Tears just rolled down my face as I walked in and saw everything gone and piles of trash all over my home," she said.

Adrian McKinnon sent his wife to see her sister while he inspected the piles left behind. As he walked back into the sunroom, a man walked through the back door straight into him, Tiffany McKinnon told the Montgomery Advertiser in a story Thursday.

"My husband Adrian caught the thief red-handed in our home," she said. "And what is even crazier, the man even had my husband's hat sitting right on his head."

Adrian McKinnon held the suspect, 33-year-old Tajuan Bullock, at gunpoint and told him to sit on the floor until he decided what to do. "We made this man clean up all the mess he made, piles of stuff, he had thrown out of my drawers and cabinets onto the floor," Tiffany McKinnon said.

When police arrived, Bullock complained about being forced to clean the home at gunpoint.

"This man had the nerve to raise sand about us making him clean up the mess he made in my house," she said. "The police officer laughed at him when he complained and said anybody else would have shot him dead."

Sounds like the robber had the mindset of a lib.

A Poole woman who thought she had "Mum" tattooed in Chinese symbols on her back has spoken of her shock at being told it actually read "Friend Come Hell."

Mum-of-one Charlene Williams, of Canford Heath, had the tattoo done on her lower back four years ago.

The 19-year-old was perfectly happy with the three-symbol design until last week when it was spotted by a Chinese woman.

She said: "I was just bending over to my little girl and this woman came in and started screaming Evil, evil - very bad!' She added: "It was awful. I can laugh now but at the time I was fuming. For four years I was walking around with that.

"I'm upset as well as angry because it was for my mum. And it was just such a shock when this lady started saying Evil' at me."

Crystal ball sets fire to house

A woman returned home to a house full of smoke after a crystal ball set fire to her lounge.

Firefighters said the crystal ball on the window sill had refracted sunlight on to the curtains, starting the blaze.

Watch manager Dave Cooper, of Dorset Fire and Rescue Service, said: "The conditions were just right with a low, strong October sun." He added: "It was a most unusual incident. The glass ball had literally refracted the light and set fire to the curtains."

The ball was a present to Margaret Padwick from her husband 40 years ago, but Margaret, a grandmother-of-nine, has never believed it held mystical properties.

She said: "I have never used it to read fortunes. It used to reflect the light all around the house. It was quite beautiful."

"After what has happened I just wanted to get rid of the blooming thing. I told the fire brigade to take it away."

Man who put baby in microwave to plead insanity

An attorney for a man accused of injuring his 2-month-old daughter by putting her in a microwave oven has filed his intent to use an insanity defence.

Joshua Mauldin, 20, of Warren, Ark., is accused putting his daughter in a hotel room microwave oven in May, critically injuring the child. Investigators have testified that he also placed the girl in a refrigerator and in a hotel room safe.
The May 10 incident happened as Mauldin, his wife and daughter were moving to Galveston, where Mauldin planned to be a preacher.

Investigators found human tissue in the microwave that matched the burns on the left side of the girl's face and her left hand. Police have said the infant was in the oven 10 to 20 seconds.

The girl is in the custody of relatives, recovering from her injuries. Mauldin and his wife, Eva Mauldin, are prohibited from contacting them.

Kerry (D-Mass.) ran for president in 2004, he received $24,000 from Chinatown…

The Times examined the cases of more than 150 donors who provided checks to Clinton after fundraising events geared to the Chinese community. One-third of those donors could not be found using property, telephone or business records. Most have not registered to vote, according to public records.

A man named Liang Zheng was listed as having contributed $1,000. The address given was a large apartment building on East 194th Street in the Bronx, but no one by that name could be located there.

Census figures for 2000 show the median family income for the area was less than $21,000. About 45% of the population was living below the poverty line, more than double the city average.

In the busy heart of East Broadway, beneath the Manhattan Bridge, is a building that is listed as the home of Sang Cheung Lee, also reported to have given $1,000. Trash was piled in the dimly lighted entrance hall. Neighbors said they knew of no one with Lee's name there; they knocked on one another's doors in a futile effort to find him.

Salespeople at a store on Canal Street were similarly baffled when asked about Shih Kan Chang, listed as working there and having given $1,000. The store sells purses, jewelry and novelty Buddha statues. Employees said they had not heard of Chang.

Another listed donor, Yi Min Liu, said he did not make the $1,000 contribution in April that was reported in his name. He said he attended a banquet for Clinton but did not give her money.

Clinton "has done a lot for the Chinese community," he said.

One New York man who said he enthusiastically donated $2,500 to Clinton doesn't appear to be eligible to do so under federal election law. He said he came to the United States from China about two years ago and didn't have a green card.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Cape Cod Commission in Massachusetts Thursday denied Cape Wind's application to bury electric cables needed to connect its proposed 420-megawatt offshore wind farm in the Nantucket Sound to the state power grid.

Cape Wind said in a release that it would challenge the Commission decision. The Cape Cod Commission is a local organization created by the state in 1990 to manage growth and protect Cape Cod's natural resources.

Sen. Ted Kennedy and many residents who own coastal property from where they could see the wind turbines on a clear day oppose the project along with some environmental groups concerned about disrupting the patterns of migratory birds and the potential effect on local sea life.

So -- no oil -- no coal -- no nuclear -- no wind. I've known he's been trying to undermine our country for many, many years -- but people couldn't believe it -- no matter HOW MUCH he voted against us. It's a shame -- the same people that didn't get it then, aren't getting it now.

These idiots sent it to "Clear Channel" - trying to get Rush in trouble. They actually thought someone would take the letter seriously. So Rush auctioned the letter -- for charity -- for over 2 million on e-bay. You'd think that would completely embarrass any signatory to that letter who had any self respect.

Well -- it didn't appear to embarrass the DIPSHITocrats. Here's what Harry Reid -- the head DIPSHITocrat in the Senate said today -- on the Senate floor.
