As expected, we’ve received a ton of hate mail, but none more hateful and incoherent than this one from a proud, liberal Montecito resident.

1. No one “warmly” welcomes someone they despise.

2. Those who “hate” the media, would not contribute to it by paying for a full-page ad.

3. Why would you care about a so-called carbon footprint, when you obviously don’t believe there is such a thing as climate change?

4. Al Gore did not build this house. Why have you not attacked the person who designed it and built on grounds that use to be open space and supported views and wildlife? Why are you not angry with the people that owned it before Mr. Gore?

5. I live alone and have 4 TV’s, however, never is there more than one on at a time! You can have 17 fireplaces, but usually only one is on at a time, not six! That house has gas fireplaces – it will not be burning any forests. (Sorry you don’t have even one.)

6. Why have you not attacked Ivan Reitman, Stuart Whitman, Dennis Miller, Carole Burnett, Steve Martin, Oprah, John Cleese and Rob Rowe, Eric Schmidt of Google??????? I could go on and on.

7. Over 80% of houses with ocean views in Montecito have over an acre, a swimming pool and spa and multiple fireplaces, bedrooms and baths. Duh! You’ve obviously never stepped your carbon smutty foot in Montecito!

8. I’m sorry your hatred and envy of what you think you know, but don’t, is burning such a hot hole in your heart. I guess those who have nothing, and no power, will always blame others and resent their success.

P.S. You’ll have no money in the Bank of Karma at the end of your life either.

I'd like to respond to this stupidity point by point if I may.

1. They do when they're being facetious, or as many morons on the internet would mistakenly argue, ironic.
2. Those who hate the media clearly would contribute to it by paying for a full-page ad. This point is demonstrated by the fact that they did contribute to it by paying for a full-page ad.
3. Climate Change might be a myth but people like Al Gore profiting from it is a painful reality. The particularly painful part is that he's going to be making a mint with OUR money and that's going to happen whether or not we believe in Climate Change.
4. Probably because the person who built it, designed it or lived in it isn't busy preaching hypocritical mumbo jumbo against just such a dwelling.
5. I guess the missed point is that fireplaces are virtually impossible to properly insulate and are known wasters of energy.
6. Refer to response 4. Listen, if you're going to iterate your gripes, I'm going to iterate my reasonable, logical, and even-minded responses.
7. So... just because everyone is doing it, that makes it alright? Duh. Also and again, those people aren't making themselves rich by preaching about energy conservation.
8. To use your own words and argument from item 1, No one apologizes to someone they despise. Although Democrats universally crave power, not everyone does. For many of us, our lack of "power" only means that we're free to do as we please. You Democrats on the other hand, spend most of your time trying to gain power and the rest of it trying to prevent others from taking it away from you. Those of us who don't trifle in such frivolities are free to speak the truth without ever having to worry about jeopardizing "crucial alliances" with people that we would otherwise avoid. 

P.S. Karma is  not a bank and has nothing to do with money (or power for that matter) and since (unlike you), I believe in God and know that my life will never end.

I can't believe that a major metropolitan paper like the LA Times would
publish drivel like your distortion-laden column I had the misfortune to
read today. The citizens of Arizona passed a law that makes it necessary
to prove you are in their state LEGALLY. They are tired of paying TWO
BILLION taxpayer dollars a year in medical and educational benefits to
people in their state ILLEGALLY. They are tired of the Mexican drug
traffickers, kidnappings (389 last year), traffic accidents, and crime
caused by ILLEGAL immigrants in their state. They are tired of citizens
of a foreign country overcrowding and bankrupting their emergency rooms
and schools. They have the ABSOLUTE RIGHT to defend their state when the
federal government fails to do so just like I have the right to put three
hollow-points in the chest of the guy who's trying to kick in my front
door when the cops don't show up.

It has been the law in this country since 1940 that foreign nationals be
able to produce proof that they are here LEGALLY by way of visa, green
card, etc. This "Produce your papers" and the allusions to Nazi Germany is
a bunch of dishonest claptrap. If you took time to read the Arizona law
(assuming you can read English) you would see that police officers may
only inquire as to an individuals immigration status in the course of a
"legal contact". The problem with you and Mexicans like you is the fact
that you have this sense of entitlement that you can enter OUR COUNTRY as
you please. You come from a culture and a country with no respect for the
law or the rule of law. The United States is a sovereign nation with the
ABSOLUTE RIGHT to decide who does and does not enter our country.

What amuses me the most is the fact that if our illegal immigration
problem was due to the influx of SWEDES, you wouldn't have written ONE
WORD in the defense of their rights. It is only because they are
Hispanics like you that you leap to their defense. I find it ironic that
you are truer to your Hispanic roots than you are to your American
citizenship, especially since the Hispanic culture is a broke-dick,
busted-ass, ignorant-ass, uneducated, going-nowhere culture and has been
for the last 500 years, and in all likelihood, will be for the NEXT 500
years.

When I moved to California in 1969, Los Angeles was a clean prosperous
city. Now it's broke under the weight of massive entitlements. Now we
need concertina wire to protect our freeway signs from Hispano-moron
graffiti "artists'. What an enlightened culture you come from that
believes that vandalizing anothers property is an art form. Over 400
California families have lost loved ones to ILLEGAL immigrant murderers.
40% of the criminals incarcerated in our prisons at CALIFORNIA TAXPAYER
EXPENSE, are ILLEGAL immigrants. Thank you so much for our overcrowded
ERs, schools and freeways. Thanks also for the gangs and the drive-by
shootings. In all fairness though, I like the tacos.

If I want to enter Mexico , France , England , Germany or ANY country on
this earth, I need to produce a passport to do so. It's THEIR COUNTRY and
I need to ask permission to do so. HOW DARE you and your brethren think
that they have some God-given right to flout our laws and come into our
country of their own accord. You and people like you are the textbook
example of why the fewer Mexicans we have in our country, the better our
country will be. We manage to produce a steady supply of home-grown
idiots on our own, thanks very much (Exhibit A - Obama)

Good luck with your boycotts and your protests. Just remember; amigo, 70%
of the people in Arizona and 65% of Americans LOVE this law. Every time
you put together thousands of protesters, you piss off MILLIONS of people
like me.

Well, this is good news and it's fun to think about but, believe me, Californians are morons.  They have double digit inflation, they pay/tax through the nose for gasoline, they have tens of billions in budget deficit problems - etc etc -- but they'll keep reelecting Boxer and Pelosi et al until they run the rest of us out of money and they STILL won't learn.  Brings a smile to my face to dream about it though.

"In 26 years of business, this is the worst I've seen it," said Scott Shortnacy, owner of the Arlington Solar Planet as well as six other branches in the Washington area. "Normally for people who tan, it's a part of their lifestyle. They keep doing it even in a recession. But everybody has been looking for ways to cut back on those areas. . . . Our sales are down 20 to 30 percent."

According to the Indoor Tanning Association, an industry trade group, most of the nation's 19,000 tanning salons are small businesses that are owned and staffed by women. Shortnacy said all but two of his several dozen employees are women. With business so slow, he opted against hiring the 10 to 15 seasonal workers he normally adds during the spring high season. Yes, the Democrats.  They're very, VERY concerned about the economy.  I know this because I heard Obama say he was going to do "everything in his power" to create jobs etc.  Meanwhile this tanning tax thing is just the latest job hammer following his recent shutdown of oil drilling.

Also, it would seem that this particular measure is going to be hitting women the hardest. Never mind about discrimination though because, as we all know, this tax was done by Democrats and, as such, cannot be racist.

What We All Know Continues To Be Ignored and Yet the Problem Is Still Unresolved.

Weird, right? We all know the truth yet we disregard it. We disregard it for a variety of reasons- convenience, greed, guilt- the list is long. Yesterday, yet another incident occurred in a Chinese school where several children and teachers were assaulted by a man. The press would have you believe that this is due to two possible reasons. 1. The man was mentally ill. 2. He was driven by "social pressures" because of the widening gap between the Haves and the Have-nots in China.

Most of the recent school invasions have been blamed on people with personal grudges or suffering from mental illness, leading to calls for improved security.

Accounts in China's state-owned media have glossed over motives and largely shied away from why schools have so often been targets. Yet experts say outbursts against the defenseless are frequently due to social pressures.

An avowedly egalitarian society only a generation ago, China's headlong rush to prosperity has sharpened differences between haves and have-nots, and the public health system has atrophied even as pressures grew.

"We must create a more healthy and just society," said Zhou Xiaozheng, a sociology professor at Renmin University in Beijing.

While it's not known if Thursday's attacker knew about previous school stabbings, Zhou said such sensational, violent acts often draw copycats.

"Normally, with these kind of violent events we hope the media won't blow them up too much, because that tends to make it spread," Zhou said.

On Wednesday, a man in the southern city of Leizhou broke into a primary school and wounded 15 students and a teacher in a knife attack.

That attack came the same day a man was executed for stabbing eight children to death outside their elementary school last month in the southeastern city of Nanping.

China likely has about 173 million adults with mental health disorders, and 158 million of them have never had professional help, according to a mental health survey in four provinces jointly done by Chinese and U.S. doctors that was published in the medical journal The Lancet in June.

The attack in March shocked China because eight children died and the assailant had no known history of mental illness. At his trial, Zheng Minsheng, 42, said he killed because he had been upset after being jilted by a woman and treated badly by her wealthy family. He was executed Wednesday, just a little over a month after his crime.

After a 2004 attack at a school in Beijing that left nine students dead, the central government ordered tighter school security nationwide. Regulations that took effect in 2006 require schools to register or inspect visitors and keep out people who have no reason to come inside.

Other sources are singing the same song. A quick google search in News for "china kindergarten" will result in countless news stories on the topic. A quick tally shows that these incidents are neither rare nor abating. The first major incident was in 2004 but the 3 most recent all occurred this year in May, last Wednesday and yesterday. One might think there's a pattern of acceleration in the frequency of these occurrences.

The solutions proposed are seemingly obvious but ultimately futile. The real problem is much larger and unfortunately for all of us, it's the elephant in the room that everyone is trying so desperately to ignore. The real root of the problem is their cultural lack of respect for basic human rights. The standard of living for the majority of the people in China is so low that even if you've never known anything else, you'd still realize that something's wrong with it.

Those who toil in China are chronically subjected to working conditions that would drive any human being insane and it's not like they're taking these jobs to get rich. The workers are wasting their lives away working for wages that are so far below the poverty line that they can only dream of dying young and being relieved of this torture.

In China as in every communist country, the few govern the many and contrary to an actual Utopia, 99% of the money goes to 1% of the population while they simultaneously orate that they're doing this for the good of the people. This is the very same thought process demonstrated by President Obama, Speaker Pelosi et al regarding healthcare reform. Contrary to the blatant and obvious objections by the American people, they did what they knew to be best for us.

Now we're being told that the healthcare plan that was going to save $143 billion (that's like million but with a b) is actually going to cost $115 billion. Of course none of us are actually surprised but nothing we did to stop it actually worked. What makes this worse is that the Liberals defend this fact with arguments like "well, we knew it was actually going to cost money but saying it would save money was the only way we could get it passed".

To wind this up and to get to the point, the working Chinese are subjected to such sub-human treatment that it's no wonder they snap. To remain subjected to such treatment with no reasonable means of escape and to not zealously object would be abnormal behavior. In spite of all the evidence in front of all of us, it takes the MSM months to finally acknowledge that terrorist acts are not the work of home grown terrorists who object to big government and to admit that yes, indeed, they're Islamic extremists. The same will be true of these seemingly bizarre killings of school children.

 I'm sure I'll be called a lunatic for suggesting this but the only obvious cause for these violent and heinous acts is that these people are trying to spare those children of miserable lives. Clearly, it's not their choice to make and obviously as Americans we can't imagine such a level of despair that we could even dream up such a "solution" but the more you understand about the actual standard of living in China, the more you'll see the likelihood of this scenario.

The US workforce shrank by 652,000 in June, one of the sharpest contractions ever. The rate of hourly earnings fell 0.1pc. Wages are flirting with deflation.

"The economy is still in the gravitational pull of the Great Recession," said Robert Reich, former US labour secretary. "All the booster rockets for getting us beyond it are failing."

"Home sales are down. Retail sales are down. Factory orders in May suffered their biggest tumble since March of last year. So what are we doing about it? Less than nothing," he said.

California is tightening faster than Greece. State workers have seen a 14pc fall in earnings this year due to forced furloughs. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is cutting pay for 200,000 state workers to the minimum wage of $7.25 an hour to cover his $19bn (£15bn) deficit.

Can Illinois be far behind? The state has a deficit of $12bn and is $5bn in arrears to schools, nursing homes, child care centres, and prisons. "It is getting worse every single day," said state comptroller Daniel Hynes. "We are not paying bills for absolutely essential services. That is obscene."

Roughly a million Americans have dropped out of the jobs market altogether over the past two months. That is the only reason why the headline unemployment rate is not exploding to a post-war high. More here - much more:

Apple responds to threats of class action lawsuits regarding antenna strength.

Dear iPhone 4 Users,

The iPhone 4 has been the most successful product launch in Apple’s history. It has been judged by reviewers around the world to be the best smartphone ever, and users have told us that they love it. So we were surprised when we read reports of reception problems, and we immediately began investigating them. Here is what we have learned.

To start with, gripping almost any mobile phone in certain ways will reduce its reception by 1 or more bars. This is true of iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, as well as many Droid, Nokia and RIM phones. But some users have reported that iPhone 4 can drop 4 or 5 bars when tightly held in a way which covers the black strip in the lower left corner of the metal band. This is a far bigger drop than normal, and as a result some have accused the iPhone 4 of having a faulty antenna design.

At the same time, we continue to read articles and receive hundreds of emails from users saying that iPhone 4 reception is better than the iPhone 3GS. They are delighted. This matches our own experience and testing. What can explain all of this?

We have discovered the cause of this dramatic drop in bars, and it is both simple and surprising.

Upon investigation, we were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong. Our formula, in many instances, mistakenly displays 2 more bars than it should for a given signal strength. For example, we sometimes display 4 bars when we should be displaying as few as 2 bars. Users observing a drop of several bars when they grip their iPhone in a certain way are most likely in an area with very weak signal strength, but they don’t know it because we are erroneously displaying 4 or 5 bars. Their big drop in bars is because their high bars were never real in the first place.

To fix this, we are adopting AT&T’s recently recommended formula for calculating how many bars to display for a given signal strength. The real signal strength remains the same, but the iPhone’s bars will report it far more accurately, providing users a much better indication of the reception they will get in a given area. We are also making bars 1, 2 and 3 a bit taller so they will be easier to see.

We will issue a free software update within a few weeks that incorporates the corrected formula. Since this mistake has been present since the original iPhone, this software update will also be available for the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G.

We have gone back to our labs and retested everything, and the results are the same— the iPhone 4’s wireless performance is the best we have ever shipped. For the vast majority of users who have not been troubled by this issue, this software update will only make your bars more accurate. For those who have had concerns, we apologize for any anxiety we may have caused.

As a reminder, if you are not fully satisfied, you can return your undamaged iPhone to any Apple Retail Store or the online Apple Store within 30 days of purchase for a full refund.

Byrd joined the Ku Klux Klan in 1942 when he was 24. His local chapter unanimously elected him the top officer of its unit..

Well, there's two things to learn and love about this whole thing.

1 - Democratics are never ... EVER, racists ... even if they are members of the KKK.

2 - Republicans are always racists no matter what.

Of course, Lott had to resign because he's not a Democratic ... he's a Republican and the media would have hounded him until he did so.  The reason it's perfectly ok to say what Clinton said is that he's a Democratic and, as such, cannot be a racist.  The media know this very well and won't say anything more about it.  'Nuff said - nudge nudge - wink wink.

Oh, let's not forget this little nugget by the "Democratic"  majority leader in the Senate, Harry Reid. (Bold is mine)
