Well, that's an easy answer. You have to be a Democrat and have enough power or clout so that other Democrats can get something from you. As long as you have stuff they want and the willingness to give it to them, they can forgive anything. It doesn't even have to be substantial. As long as they can get stuff without a lot of effort, it's cool.
The next time you go to a trade show, stop the people with the most SWAG and ask them if they're Democrats or Republicans. I'd bet they're all Democrats. They're positively thrilled with the idea of getting stuff for "free" that they completely ignore the fact that it's junk that will sit in the bag taking up space until they throw or give it away.
