Doofus debate "moderator" gets PWNED

The candidates in the Massachusetts special election met tonight for their final debate, with tough attacks flying between Democrat Martha Coakley, Republican Scott Brown, and independent libertarian Joe Kennedy.

David Gergen, the moderator for this event, openly introduced the debate by telling the audience that this election may very well determine the result of the health care debate.  Whew, luckily he reminded the audience about this because otherwise they wouldn't have a clue what to think.  He's very "helpful" ... just like all idiots libs ... they're going to help you whether you like it or not.  I don't know about you but I LOVE help from idiots libs.

Gergen said that from the experience of 1993 and 1994, if this health care bill fails, it could be another 15 years before the issue is taken up again. Would the candidates be willing to put it off the table for another 15 years, as the occupant of Ted Kennedy's seat?  Yes, you can see how fair and impartial the "moderator" is, can't you?  He's just there to "facilitate" the debate.  He wouldn't DREAM of letting his own ideas affect the "debate."  That's what I like about the libs .... their overwhelming commitment to fair play.  They INSIST you think for yourself.  If you reach a different conclusion than they, they never look down on you.

The irony is that Harry Reid is being accused of making racist statements toward Barack Obama, but it is Reid who has fallen in line to carry the water for the president, and it is Obama who is in the position of calling the shots. Obama says he has forgiven Reid and wants to put the whole thing behind them. I guess Democrats are only capable of being offended by things said by Republicans.

Three Republicans are vying for their nomination to run against Harry Reid, and polls show that Reid would lose to any of his potential opponents if the election were held today. Based on current polling of GOP voters, Reid's likely opponent in next November's election will be former Nevada GOP Chairwoman Sue Lowden. Lowden says that even before this latest revelation, Reid had become an embarrassment to most Nevadans. Reid responds by saying, of Lowden, that he will "vaporize her." Lowden, sporting the sense of humor that has gotten her this far, quips, "Tell him to start with my hips!"

More than half of Nevadans are unhappy with Sen. Harry Reid, according to a new poll commissioned by the Las Vegas Review-Journal. It's the worst "unfavorable" rating he's received in the newspaper's surveys for this year's election, and it comes amid quiet speculation -- or perhaps wishful thinking by his opponents -- that it's time for the Nevada Democrat to retire rather than lose re-election.

In response, Reid told the Review-Journal Friday he wouldn't consider stepping aside as did Sen. Chris Dodd of Connecticut, whose announcement this week prompted rumors that the Senate majority leader might think about ending his political career now that he's the most vulnerable incumbent.

"I am absolutely running for re-election," said Reid, 70, in a statement. "These are difficult times for Nevada and as the majority leader of the Senate I have been able to take action to address those challenges. But I know there is more work to do to turn our state's economy around and create jobs and I am committed to seeing it through." More here:

Good, Harry.  I'm glad to see you're going to run again.  It will give me much more pleasure to see you get your ass trounced rather than admit defeat and retire.  I might even stay up late to watch the election results.  Yep, nice bowl of popcorn and one of the very few sodas I drink during the year sounds good ... I'm already making plans.

Come to think of it, this election promises such great entertainment, it might be a great night to sit out at Weezer's place, put the TV in the window, have a fire, and consume some adult beverages.

Whaaa? Shocker, gas prices continue to rise

NEW YORK, Jan 10 (Reuters) - The average price of a gallon of gasoline in the United States rose 14 cents in the last three weeks to their highest level in more than a year, reversing a decline that began in November, an industry analyst said on Sunday.

"It's proof that we can have crude oil and gasoline price increases without demand increasing," Lundberg said. "It's almost like a penalty (for consumers), with the bad economy, with unemployment still going up and crude prices rising ... when the economy has not improved." More at Reuters:

The opposition seized on fears that prices for imported goods will double as shoppers formed lines of more than a hundred people outside some stores in the capital Caracas.

The socialist Chavez believes the state should have a weighty role in managing the economy. During his 11 years in office he has nationalized most heavy industry, and business and finance are tightly regulated. Yes, this seems to be working out very well ... the inflation just "happened."

The devaluation is politically risky but means every dollar of oil revenue puts more bolivars in government coffers. That allows Chavez to lavish cash on social projects and fund salary increases ahead of parliamentary elections in September. More money for the government and less for the people.  Perfect.  He's just doing it for their own good but those stupid citizens are too stupid to get it.

Opponents were quick to criticize the socialist, who a year ago promised the global financial crisis would not touch "a hair" of Venezuela's economy. He announced the devaluation on Friday night during an important baseball game.

"By establishing the exchange rate at 4.3 bolivars per dollar, the quality of life for Venezuelans is automatically devalued since we now have half the money we had before," said Caracas Mayor Antonio Ledezma, a Chavez opponent.

Dangerous Christians pushing their agenda on others

Just when Denmark thought the worst was over, Islamic fury has come back to haunt it with an assassination attempt on the artist whose cartoon of the prophet Muhammad as a suicide bomber had an explosive impact four years ago on the Muslim world.

An axe-wielding Somali extremist broke into the home of Kurt Westergaard on Friday night as the 75-year-old cartoonist was looking after Stephanie, his five-year-old granddaughter.

Westergaard, whose little ink drawing of Muhammad with a bomb in his turban sparked riots throughout the Middle East in 2006, has received numerous death threats. He pressed an alarm button to summon police when the attacker entered the house in Aarhus, Denmark’s second city, by breaking a window.

He did not have time to collect the child from the living room before locking himself into a “panic room”, a specially fortified bathroom. He said the assailant had shouted “swear words, really crude words” and shrieked about “blood” and “revenge”, as he smashed the axe in vain against the bathroom door.

“I feared for my grandchild,” he told Jyllands-Posten, the newspaper that had commissioned the cartoon. “But she did great. I knew that he wouldn’t do anything to her.” He went on: “It was close, really close. But we did it.”

The attacker, who was also carrying a knife, shouted, “I’ll be back”, before going outside to confront police. He smashed a police car window with the axe and was shot in the hand and a knee when he threw the axe at an officer. He appeared in court on a stretcher yesterday to be charged with the attempted murder of Westergaard and the policeman.

Jakob Scharf, head of Danish intelligence, said yesterday the assailant had close relations to Al-Shabaab, a Somali terror group, as well as to Al-Qaeda leaders in eastern Africa. It so happens that Jan 4, (1643) is Isaac Newton's birthday ... unless you use the "OS" (old style) dates ... in which case it's Dec 25, (1642.)  Interesting, huh?  Nothing is easy, is it.  Turns out there's a whole big snake-handling involved in "OS vs NS" (Old Style/New Style) dates.  I figured you'd want to know.

More hopey changey in Venezuela

Oil-rich Venezuela ushered in 2010 with new measures rationing electricity use in malls, businesses and billboards, as Hugo Chavez's government aimed to save power amid a crippling drought.

The new regulations came into effect January 1, with businesses required to comply with reduced consumption limits and authorities warning of forced power cuts and rate hikes if the measures are not followed.

A decree published on Christmas Eve states that commercial centers may operate from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm on the electricity grid, but beyond that establishments would have to operate off-grid, using their own generators. More here

In February of 2009, the man turned up at St James's University Hospital in Leeds after three weeks of stinging pain in one eye, which had become red, watery and light-sensitive.

Doctors prescribed antibiotics, assuming he was afflicted with a particularly stubborn case of conjunctivitis, but the treatment did not relieve the symptoms.

When they re-examined the patient with high-magnification lenses, doctors spotted ultra-thin, hair-like projections sticking into the cornea. They were so small that even mircoforceps could not remove them.

That's when the man recalled a close encounter with his pet spider shortly before his eye first became irritated.

While cleaning a stubborn stain on the glass tank that was home to his Chilean Rose tarantula, he turned his head to find the fist-sized arachnid very nearby.

The spider released a "mist of hairs" which hit his eye and face, according the journal.

Treatment with topical steroids largely cleared his symptoms, but as late as August he continued to complain of mild discomfort.

"As a defence mechanism against potential predators, the tarantula will rub its hind legs against its abdomen to dislodge" special hairs from the back of its body, the study explained.

"Multiple barbs allow the hairs to migrate through ocular tissue as well as other surfaces."More at Beitbart:

Yes, I feel very sorry for him, don't you?  I mean, who could have possibly foreseen anything going wrong from keeping a tarantula in your house.  The thing is, with dogs/cats ... they WANT to be in your house.  If you left them out, they come back.  If you leave them out with their food and shelter, they STILL want to come back in the house.  Try it with a tarantula.

To me, keeping a tarantula is imprisoning a tarantula ... especially if you keep him in a little tiny aquarium.  I don't feel sorry for idiots like this.  My feeling is he got far less than what he deserved to get.  My guess is he's a lib.  He wants to impose his whims on other creatures and, I predict, he WILL NOT LEARN from this experience.

ScienceDaily (Dec. 31, 2009) — Most of the carbon dioxide emitted by human activity does not remain in the atmosphere, but is instead absorbed by the oceans and terrestrial ecosystems. In fact, only about 45 percent of emitted carbon dioxide stays in the atmosphere.

In contradiction to some recent studies, he finds that the airborne fraction of carbon dioxide has not increased either during the past 150 years or during the most recent five decades.
