Those Amish criminals
EBENSBURG, Pa. (AP) - Members of a small Amish community in western Pennsylvania have to decide by tomorrow whether to challenge a state order over their school's outhouses.
The school sits on Andy Swartzentruber's farm 70 miles east of Pittsburgh. A state judge has ruled that he and the school are in violation of the state sewage disposal law.
The community is 1 of the most conservative in the Amish Christian sect. And the practice has been to collect the waste in a bucket and dump it onto a field. But the county says they have to install a holding tank and hire a certified sewage hauler.
Swartzentruber is refusing to pay the fine of more than $500. During a break while tilling a field, he told The Associated Press he'd rather go to jail than violate his religious principles.
County officials acknowledge jail's not the answer. But a lawyer for the sewage enforcement agency says, "I still have to find a way to solve the problem."

A 41-year-old woman in being held by police in Stockholm on suspicions of raping a 30-year-old man who went home with her after the two met at an area pub on Monday night.
According to police, the two were hungry and under the influence of alcohol as they made their way home from the bar.
“She invited him up for a little midnight snack,” Towe Hägg of the Stockholm police told The Local.
Once getting the man up to her place, the woman began to make sexual advances toward the man, which he resisted.
“We don’t know if it was a ‘no’ or if it was more than a ‘no’,” said Hägg.
After the man refused to have sex with the woman, she then performed oral sex on him against his will, according to the Aftonbladet newspaper.
The man called police the next morning to report that he was raped.
The woman remains in police custody while prosecutors determine whether or not to file formal charges.

Semaj Booker, the Tacoma 10-year-old who talked his way onto two Southwest Airlines flights without tickets last year, nearly got away with it again.
According to the Transportation Security Administration, Semaj made it through the security screening area at Sea-Tac Airport early Tuesday morning and was on the ramp to a Sacramento-bound plane before being apprehended.
Port of Seattle police escorted Semaj out of the airport and placed him in protective custody at 6:35 a.m., said Perry Cooper, spokesman for the port.
“When they discovered he had been reported as a missing person in Tacoma, he was transported home and released to the custody of his mother.”

You may be surprised by the number of people that there are and they all seem to be rushing around everywhere," the guide says.
"Even though some may look like they have a frown on their face, they are very friendly people - many of them just work in offices, jobs they don't enjoy, and so they do not smile as much as they should."
The warriors, who are leaving their village of Eluai in northern Tanzania for the first time, will run the 26.2-mile course in their traditional red robes, complete with shields and sticks, to raise money for life-saving water supplies back home.
The four page "Visiting England: A Cultural Briefing for the Warriors" written by volunteers from Greenforce, a British charity which is working in their village of Eluai, also warns about the perils of time keeping.
"You cannot rely on the sun to tell the time accurately and will have to rely on clocks and watches. The sun will rise and set at different times."
There is a whole section on "manners", which are described as very different to the acceptable social behaviour in Tanzania.
"Whereas at home for you it is acceptable to spit, in England it is not but, if you have to, you must do so in a sink or in some trees when no one is looking."
When nature calls they are advised to seek out a public convenience as opposed to using a tree or bush.
While the guide praises the warmth of the English people, the Masai are warned not to take their hosts' generosity for granted.
"If you see something that someone else has, like a bracelet, and you like it, then the person will find it very unusual if you were to take it and wear it."
The Masai men - who become warriors after tracking, running down and killing a male lion - may struggle with Greenforce's interpretation of how English law operates.
"For example, if someone was to see a thief and chase after him and, when they catch him they hurt him, then the person who hurt the thief would go to prison as well as the thief."
The Masai's shields and sticks, although permitted by the race organisers, must be left behind when sightseeing.
They may be tempted to engage in their natural sport of hunting in England, particularly if they spot a cow, sheep or pig in a field.
But the briefing note says: "You may see these animals in a field, seemingly left alone. It is important to remember that these animals are owned by someone and are being looked after."
The warriors, who arrive in Britain next week for the race on Sunday April 13, have also been advised not to be too offended by the brief running attire of their fellow competitors in the marathon.
"You will see many people who are wearing only small clothes and you will wonder why they are cold and may think they are being disrespectful.
"This is normal for England, especially when it is sunny or in the evening. However, it is illegal to show certain parts of the body and for this reason it is important that you wear underpants if you are wearing your blankets."
The guide provides a tour of a typical home, complete with description of what happens in a bathroom and at meal times.

The victim was murdered by the husband and relatives of a neighbour whose death was blamed on her witchcraft.
Dozens of women are killed every year on suspicion of being witches or witch doctors in India, where superstition is widespread, especially in rural areas that lack an effective schooling system.

Another school suspension
According to a May 29, Telegram.com article, a uniformed veteran gave the 10-year-old two empty rifle shell casings from blanks used during the town’s Memorial Day celebration Monday morning. Bradley gave one of the empty casings to his grandfather and kept the other as a souvenir. The trouble began when he took his souvenir to school the next day.
“He was just playing with it at lunch,” explained Crystal Geslak, Bradley’s mother. “He wasn't showing it to anyone; he had it in his hand and was playing with it.”
A teacher saw him with the harmless piece of brass and confiscated it. Ms. Geslak was then called at work and told to come and pick up her son, who had been suspended for five days!
Ms. Geslak arrived at the school to find her son in tears. “I was totally shocked. I couldn’t believe this was happening,” she said. “It was just an empty shell, not even from a real bullet. A sharpened pencil would be more dangerous than this piece of metal.”
“He was so proud to have been given them. His dad’s a veteran, his uncle’s a veteran, both his grandfathers are veterans. Memorial Day is a big thing to us. It’s a very important holiday and we have a big celebration every year,” Ms. Geslak said.
Ms. Geslak, who will be forced to miss work in order to stay home with her son, says she is worried about what having a “weapon-related suspension” on his school record will mean to his future.

The US military said on Friday it was probing complaints that marines handed out coins inscribed with a verse from the Bible to a group of Sunni Muslims in Iraq, sparking outrage among local residents.
It said a service member involved in the incident in the former flashpoint city of Fallujah west of Baghdad was removed from his duties on Thursday.
"US forces initiated an investigation into reports that a coin with a Bible verse written in Arabic was distributed to Iraqi citizens as they passed through a Fallujah entry control point," the military said in a statement.
"A coalition force service member was removed from his duties Thursday amid concerns from Fallujah's citizens regarding reports of inappropriate conduct."
Residents of Fallujah, scene of one of the bloodiest post-invasion battles between insurgents and US forces in Iraq in 2004, said that marines had been doling out the token-like coins to residents to promote Christianity.
The incident occurred less than than two weeks after a US soldier was removed from Iraq for using a Koran for target practice at a firing range near Baghdad and writing graffiti in the Muslim holy book.
The incident sparked outrage from the Iraqi government of President Nuri al-Maliki and prompted an apology from US President George W. Bush. But it triggered protests that left several people dead in Afghanistan.
Yes - they were OUTRAGED due to some guy handing out Christian coins. They were OUTRAGED when some guy used a Koran for target practice. President Bush had to apologize. They are the religion of perpetual outrage.
Now -- where was the outrage and presidential apology when some "artist" dangled a sculpture of Jesus in a bottle of urine? The high court affirmed a decision by an appellate court last week, saying Child Protective Services failed to show an immediate danger to the more than 400 children swept up from the Yearning For Zion Ranch nearly two months ago.
"On the record before us, removal of the children was not warranted," the justices said in their ruling issued in Austin.
Texas officials claimed at one point that there were 31 teenage girls at the ranch who were pregnant or had been pregnant, but later conceded that about half of those mothers, if not more, were adults. One was 27.
Under Texas law, children can be taken from their parents if there's a danger to their physical safety, an urgent need for protection and if officials made a reasonable effort to keep the children in their homes. The high court agreed with the appellate court that the seizures fell short of that standard.

As I have said before, I was never comfortable with this deal.
Now -- who is in trouble? Will these peeps be suing the everloving crap out of the citizens of Texas? When I have to pay money out of my pocket for the clearly negligent decisions of my state officials, I expect them to lose their jobs. Who will lose their job over this?
Here is the call, if you have reasonable cause to suspect criminal activity, then do your duty in a measured and responsible way. PS. - Reasonable cause isn't a mysterious phone call from a person who is known to point and holler "witch" repeatedly.

Congress, doing what it does best, nothing!
Let's Sue OPEC! That'll Teach 'Em!
May 21, 2008Energy TribuneWhen it comes to energy policy, Congress goes from dumb to dumber. The latest example: a bill passed by the House of Representatives on May 20 that will allow the U.S. government to sue OPEC for conspiring to raise prices.
There are several reasons why the bill, which passed by a margin of 324 to 84, makes no sense. I’ll focus on two: reciprocity and hypocrisy.
First, reciprocity. If the U.S. can demand that foreign oil producers increase their output, what’s to stop them from demanding that we produce more of what they want? Robert Rapier, author of the R-Squared Energy blog, has made this point most succinctly. His April 29 column offers an analogy that shows just how nutty this idea is:
"Let's say Saudi Arabia loves American wood. They love it so much, that their purchases start to drive the price higher. It seems other countries love American wood as well, so supplies are tight. But Saudi [sic] feels like they have a God-given right to cheap wood. Therefore, they demand that we increase production of our wood to bring prices back down. They demand that we overproduce our resources in order to meet what they would prefer to pay, because they have grown dependent on our wood. So, they threaten to sue and take us before the world court."
Rapier, a clever Oklahoma-born chemical engineer, goes on to say that by threatening to sue OPEC, the U.S. is demanding that the oil-producing countries “produce according to the price we prefer to pay –- not necessarily what's in their own best long-term interest.”
That’s precisely the point. The U.S. has no legal right to compel foreign companies (or countries) to produce more of anything. Further, if we could somehow force the OPEC members to produce more oil, then why not sue the Dutch to make them produce more beer? I like Heineken. But I don’t like paying $1 per bottle. How about if we sue the Netherlands for under-producing Heineken?
The other problem with the House measure is its blatant hypocrisy. Congress has restricted drilling in the U.S. by making (for example) the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and other areas off-limits to oil and gas exploration. Thus, the U.S. wants to protect its own environment – by preventing new oil production in America – while demanding that foreigners spend billions to drill on their lands. We’re told repeatedly that A.N.W.R. won’t make much difference in terms of new supplies. Not true. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the refuge holds about one-third of America’s oil reserves and more than half of its gas reserves.
The new House measure aimed at OPEC came just one week after a Senate vote that prevents energy companies from drilling in A.N.W.R. On May 13, by a margin of 56 to 42, the Senate blocked a measure that would have allowed oil exploration in A.N.W.R. and in areas that lie offshore the Pacific and Atlantic coasts. After the vote, Sen. Richard Durbin, an Illinois Democrat, dismissed the idea that domestic energy production will do any good, declaring, “We can’t drill our way to lower prices.”
We can’t. But if Congress can force foreign countries to drill more, lower prices are certain?
It just gets dumber and dumber.

This is just plain weird
A homeless woman who sneaked into a man’s house and lived undetected in his closet for a year was arrested in Japan after he became suspicious when food mysteriously began disappearing.
Police found the 58-year-old woman Thursday hiding in the top compartment of the man’s closet and arrested her for trespassing, police spokesman Hiroki Itakura from southern Kasuya town said Friday.
The resident of the home installed security cameras that transmitted images to his mobile phone after becoming puzzled by food disappearing from his kitchen over the past several months.
One of the cameras captured someone moving inside his home Thursday after he had left, and he called police believing it was a burglar. However, when they arrived they found the door locked and all windows closed.
“We searched the house ... checking everywhere someone could possibly hide,” Itakura said. “When we slid open the shelf closet, there she was, nervously curled up on her side."
The woman told police she had no place to live and first sneaked into the man’s house about a year ago when he left it unlocked.
The closet is part of a Japanese-style room, one of several rooms in his one-story house where the man lived alone — or so he had thought.

Police found the 58-year-old woman Thursday hiding in the top compartment of the man’s closet and arrested her for trespassing, police spokesman Hiroki Itakura from southern Kasuya town said Friday.
The resident of the home installed security cameras that transmitted images to his mobile phone after becoming puzzled by food disappearing from his kitchen over the past several months.
One of the cameras captured someone moving inside his home Thursday after he had left, and he called police believing it was a burglar. However, when they arrived they found the door locked and all windows closed.
“We searched the house ... checking everywhere someone could possibly hide,” Itakura said. “When we slid open the shelf closet, there she was, nervously curled up on her side."
The woman told police she had no place to live and first sneaked into the man’s house about a year ago when he left it unlocked.
The closet is part of a Japanese-style room, one of several rooms in his one-story house where the man lived alone — or so he had thought.
