Death Row inmate wants a joke to be his final statement.
A man scheduled to be executed tomorrow for the fatal shooting of his neighbours almost 16 years ago wants to tell a joke as part of his final statement from the Texas death chamber gurney.
Patrick Knight, 39, has been considering dozens of jokes he has received in recent weeks after soliciting them to try to comfort his friends on death row.
Knight said he got the idea for a joke as his last statement after a friend, Vincent Gutierrez, was executed earlier this year and laughed from the death chamber gurney: "Where's a stunt double when you need one?"

Shocker - Idiotic law gets idiotic results
CARPENTERSVILLE, Ill. (AP) - Authorities tracked down a 4-year-old girl who called 911 nearly 300 times last month by offering to deliver McDonald's to her suburban Chicago apartment.
Unbeknownst to her mother, the girl used a deactivated cell phone to call dispatchers 287 times in June—sometimes as often as 20 times a shift.
Dispatchers heard the child's voice but could only track the phone's signal to the apartment complex.
So authorities used a ruse to pinpoint her.
"We asked (the caller) what she wanted. She said she wanted McDonald's," said Steve Cordes, executive director of QuadCom's emergency center, which covers Carpentersville.
"We talked with her and we convinced her if she told us where she lives, we would bring her McDonald's," he said. "She finally gave us her address. So we sent the police over—with no McDonald's."
After police arrived, the girl's mother took away the phone, Cordes said.
Under federal law, deactivated cell phones still must be able to access 911. Many deactivated phones will contact an emergency call center if the user holds down the nine key.

4th of July - Did you know this?

Fifty-six brave men made history in Philadelphia 231 years ago.
Most Americans know basic information about the most famous of these men. Most know that Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence. Most know that John Hancock signed his name large enough so that the king of England could read it without his spectacles, and that other patriots like John and Samuel Adams were there. Some even know that Ben Franklin said, "We must all hang together, or most assuredly, we will all hang separately."
But what about the other 51 signers? Who were they? Their names may be forgotten, but their sacrifices live on as powerful testimonies of the price that was paid to found this country. The stories of all 56 men can be found in the book Greatness to Spare by T. R. Fehrenbach, but I believe the best examples of sacrifice come from the signers from New York and New Jersey.
In late 1776, the British captured New York City. They found out which New Yorkers were in the Continental Congress and immediately pursued them.
Francis Lewis was not at home when the British arrived, but his wife was. The British captured her and treated her brutally. Even though she was eventually set free, her health had deteriorated so much that she died shortly after release.
Philip Livingston's houses were occupied by the British and his family was forced to flee. His health failed, and he did not live to see American victory.
William Floyd’s possessions were stolen and his property destroyed. Floyd's wife died before the war ended.
Lewis Morris also lost his house and property. Morris owned about 1,000 acres of forestland, which the British clear-cut.
The signers from New Jersey did not fare any better.
John Hart's wife was on her deathbed when Hart was forced to leave her side to escape. He lived as a fugitive. The British offered him a pardon if he would simply surrender and swear allegiance to the Crown. He refused. When he was finally able to return home, his wife was dead and his thirteen children were missing. He never found all of his family again and died soon thereafter.
John Witherspoon's house was plundered and his library of more than 300 books was burned. His son was also killed in the Battle of Germantown.
Richard Stockton evacuated his family, but he was recognized by a British sympathizer. The British arrived, captured him and looted his estate. Stockton was eventually released, but he was in poor health. It was not long before he died.
Two of Abraham Clark's sons served in the army. Both were captured, brutally treated and even starved. The British offered to release his sons if he deserted the American cause. He refused. Thankfully, both of Clark's sons were eventually released alive.
The commitment that the Signers possessed can be summed up by Thomas Nelson, a Virginia signer who lived in Yorktown. Throughout the war, he donated money, food and horses to the military. In 1781, the British General Cornwallis was trapped at Yorktown. Nelson was on the front lines and noticed that the Americans were bombarding everything except his house, which was being used as a British headquarters. Nelson ordered that the cannons be lowered and that his house be leveled to the ground. The resulting onslaught killed several officers, and days later, the British surrendered. But America never repaid Nelson, and he died bankrupt.
Greatness to Spare finishes with a moving summary:
Fifty-six Americans pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.
It was no idle pledge. Nine Signers died of wounds or hardships during the Revolutionary War.
Five were captured or imprisoned, in some cases with brutal treatment.
The wives, sons, and daughters of others were killed, jailed, mistreated, persecuted, or left penniless. One was driven from his wife's deathbed and lost all his children.
The houses of twelve Signers were burned to the ground. Seventeen lost everything they owned.
Every Signer was proscribed as a traitor; every one was hunted. Most were driven into flight; most were at one time or another barred from their families or homes.
Most were offered immunity, freedom, rewards, their property, or the lives and release of loved ones to break their pledged word or to take the King's protection. Their fortunes were forfeit, but their honor was not. No Signer defected, or changed his stand, throughout the darkest hours. Their honor, like the nation, remained intact.
Because of their actions 231 years ago, some of the 56 men lost their lives. Some lost their fortunes. But not a single man lost his honor. So as we celebrate today, remember the stories of the brave men who declared our independence and remember the price they paid so that we could live free.

Yep! here we have another success story (scroll down) for socialism in today's Atlanta Urinal and Constipation.
Zimbabwe enforces price-cuts mandate
Inspectors and police raided stores in Zimbabwe on Sunday to enforce sweeping price cuts imposed to curb soaring inflation. At least 20 business executives were arrested over the weekend for hoarding goods and violating the government's order last week to slash prices of most products by half. Gasoline prices were ordered reduced by 70 percent, and stations quickly ran dry. Zimbabwe has the world's highest inflation, with an official rate of 4,500 percent —- but independent financial institutions calculate real rate is closer to 9,000 percent.
Whoda thunk it? You put an artificially low price on gas and you run out. I've seen this movie before. We tried price controls during the administrations of Nixon, Ford, and Carter and guess what? They didn't work! They never do!
You cannot repeal the Law of Supply and Demand, although socialists throughout the brief history of socialism never seem to let that fact penetrate their mushy brains. Price controls do not work. They're discovering that in Iran. Maybe if they pray long enough to their moon god Allan he can figger out a way to get around that pesky economic law.
As an aside, I think we should launch a cruise missile and take out Iran's lone oil refinery. Then, they would have to import all of their gasoline. If Aramalamadingdong thinks the rioting over gas shortages is bad now, it would really get bad then.
It won't be too much longer until Hugo Chavez competely destroys Venezuela's economy. But it won't be his fault. He'll just blame it on Jorge Bush.
But back to Zimbabwe. I'm not shedding a tear. Let 'em starve. Mugabe was a known socialist. He was elected in free and fair elections. Just ask Jimmah Carter. Mugabe took over a rich country and bankrupted it. A country that used to be a bread basket that exported food is now a starving basket case that has to import food. He can thank his land "reforms" for that. Confiscate successful farms from whites and give them to illiterate peasants. How's that working out, Bob?
Yannow what? South Africa is considering implementing those same "reforms". The ANC is a socialist party. They're running South Africa. I wonder how long it will be before they destoy that country?
I'm not shedding any tears for Zimbabwe. When Venezuela and South Africa go down the shitter I won't shed any tears for them either.

The contract, which can be redeemed for $100 if McCain gets the nomination (and is worthless if he does not), once sold for nearly $60. By this measure, he trails Giuliani and Thompson, who trade above $33, and Romney at $20. Rep. Ron Paul of Texas is now close behind McCain at $3.

I think I'm giving up on FoxNews. The channel has become far too aggressively lowbrow, stupid, and carnival-barker-ish for my tastes. My tastes aren't exactly elevated, but I do have limits, and FoxNews has violated mine.
Almost every time I have the channel on I feel stupid, because it's so clearly chasing the stupid demographic. And I'm not part of that demographic, and do not wish to be treated as part of that demographic.
Maybe this is how it's been getting ratings all along and I never noticed. Well, I'm noticing now. I'd rather watch friggin' CNN than this televised coloring book for mental defectives.
I'll still watch Hume, Wallace, and Red Eye, of course. And O'Reilly every now and again, when he's on about some outrage or has a good guest. But as a general matter, that's it for me.
No wonder airports and hospitals and hotels run CNN and only CNN. There is political bias, and then there is bias against the aggressively, obnoxiously submoronic. I can't blame anyone for having the latter bias.
Here's some news for Fox: Your core audience is conservative. Not retarded. I assure you they're not the same thing, though you seem to believe they are.
Oh, Right, That's Why I Don't Watch CNN: After promising that his show doesn't take sides, Cooper presents an "analysis" of the Libby pardon so breathtakingly one-sided I have trouble believing I just saw it on a "news" channel, labeled as "news" rather than opinion.

Tehran - Iran has rejected a request by United States filmmaker Oliver Stone to make a film about President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the website of the news network Press TV reported on Sunday.
Ahmadinejad's media advisor, Mehdi Kalhor, said that Stone had requested to make a film about Ahmadinejad which was however rejected by the president.
"We have already seen his documentaries - even though Stone is considered a member of the opposition group in the US, it is still part of the Great Satan," he said.
'Imperialistic policies'
Since the 1979 Islamic revolution, Iran has branded the US as the "Great Satan" for what Iran calls imperialistic policies worldwide.
"We believe American cinema is void of real art and culture and largely used as a mouthpiece," he added.
Despite the remarks by Kalhor, Stone is regarded within cinema circles in Islamic Iran as a distinguished filmmaker. - dpa

Suggestion: Bush should have reduced the fine to a more reasonable $50,000, which just so happens to be how much Sandy Berger was fined for stealing and destroying classified documents and lying about it to investigators (he wasn't charged for the latter, but subsequent revelations has made it clear he did just that).
Making the fine $50,000 would have been more in line with Libby's transgressions, and it would have made it harder for Democrats to argue against it. The penalty -- no jail time, $50,000, probation -- would have been so similar to Berger's that one could scarcely mention it without also mentioning Berger.

Man beats peacock he says was a vampire
A peacock that roamed into the parking lot of a Burger King in New York City was beaten by a man who insisted it was a vampire.
Animal control officials in Staten Island say the bird was beaten so fiercely that most of its tail feathers fell out and it had to be euthanized.
The seven-year-old male peacock wandered into the restaurant parking lot and perched on a car hood last week. Charmed employees had been feeding it bread when the man appeared.
A restaurant worker says the man grabbed the bird by the neck, hurled it to the ground and started stomping it. She says when he was asked what he was doing, he responded, "'I'm killing a vampire!"'
Employees called police, but the man ran when he saw them. Authorities were looking for the attacker, described as being in his teens or early 20s.
