Maybe ambient temperature is important in general unrest. Wait - let me finish. The Mid-East, (Iraq, Iran, Israel, etc) are hot. Really hot. Average temps for some of our Forces in that area are 110+ degrees Fahrenheit every day. I'd be grouchy and pissed-off every day too.
When is the last time the the Inuits (Eskimos) started a war or a Jihad? How about Iceland, Greenland, Norway, Sweden, or Switzerland? Not to mention Canada, especially. This planet needs a good, long Ice Age to calm the fuck down. Cold is good for tempers.
