A child had surgery at Memorial Hospital after being bitten in the face by the family’s pit bull at their south Colorado Springs home, police said.

The child had a 2-inch cut on the forehead and another 2-inch cut below the eye, said Sgt. Rick Cirka. Police would not give the age or gender of the child.

Officers were called to the home in the 900 block of Conejos Street about 3:45 p.m., where they found the child, the pit bull, two other dogs and a baby sitter who was underage. Police are still trying to determine if the attack was unprovoked.

Cirka said the three dogs were taken to the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region, and the pit bull that attacked the child was euthanized at the request of the owner.
The Humane Society could not be reached for comment.

The child’s father was cited for child abuse for allegedly leaving the young child in the care of an underage baby sitter, Cirka said.
