I'd call that a rather large carbon "footprint". What an absolute knucklehead.
What percentage of a home's energy do you goes into powering 4 computer monitors? Answer, much less than 1%. Why don't you quote the right wing hatchet job done by the Tennessee center for Policy research, so I can explain what is wrong with it.

Yea OF COURSE Al Gore is hypocritical, aren't we all to some degree. But give the guy a break, he's trying to do some good in this life. If he's wrong he's wrong... worst case scenario, we have less reliance on Middle East Oil and cleaner air to breath. Nobody is going to make you stop driving a pickup truck, I know because you wouldn't let them. But don't you think we should use technology to get more mpg if the function remains the same? Or use biodiesel or ethanol if it provides the same performance. Ethanol can be produced from forest debris or grown on American farms. These technologies are going to be big business and we should get in on the ground floor. It makes sense economically, militarily, and environmentally to be a leader in efficiency technology. Think Detroit and Michigan vs. Japan in the 80's

Well maybe -- but we ALL aren't telling everyone else how to live.
Nor are we ALL trying to tax the everloving shit out of Americans for their "carbon footprint."
As for Ethanol / Alternative fuels -- I couldn't care less what they do -- as long as it isn't MANDATED BY THE GOVERNMENT.
But that's what "global warming" is -- an excuse -- so the people will be quiet while the helpful government picks your pocket and you feel guilty whilst they do it.

So we shouldn't have any CAFE standards at all?
We shouldn't have emissions standards? (ever been to mexico city or Bejing?)
Industry can dump whatever they want into the nearest river and spew clouds of toxins into the air?
(like China)
Industries could collude and drive prices up and limit competition?
No minimum wage or workplace safety?
No weekends, maternity leave, workers comp?
Secure and effective power grid?
Not to mention free speech and the
right to bear arms?
You do realize that these are all "federally mandated" don't you?
Capitalism without some limits concentrates power and reduces national sovereignty. Mandating that companies produce vehicles that are efficient, helps the long term stability of the industry, the nation and it's workers. Industry left alone works to maximize quarterly and share holder profits. This is sometimes good for your 401K but not much else. We are not even talking about limiting individual freedoms, we are talking about corporations.
The reality is that oil will not be around forever, simple fact. We should use what is left more efficiently and start preparing now for when the tap runs dry. We are running full speed down a dead end street, and our military and industry alone will make the street longer, but it can't create a different direction. Federal mandates however, can create incentives to produce economically viable energy alternatives that would produce high skilled jobs for American workers and reduce the need to deal with the people that live on top of our oil. The market alone doesn't provide these incentives. If it did, we would be getting 200 mpg and have tires that lasted longer than the car.
Please explain, if possible, this fantasy of right-leaning folks that industry will do good if left alone. Market forces will guide it perfectly and do what's in the best interest of the US.
Corporations have proven again and again that they have no interest in our national sovereignty. We have been sold out time and again... and somehow your representatives have convinced you it's in your best interest. Why do righties so readily accept the concentration of power in corporations? It would be laughable if it wasn't so sad, how many one great American cities are now giant ghettos? I think there is a happy medium between free markets and regulations. It is a difficult balance between personal freedom, corporate and environmental sustainability, and national sovereignty.
Wyoming State constitution:
"There shall be no consolidation or combination of corporations of any kind whatever to prevent competition, to control or influence productions or prices thereof, or in any other manner to interfere with the public good and general welfare."
