Both these remarkable images were captured from the ground by French astrophotographer Thierry Legault.

The first, showing the ISS passing in front of the full moon, was taken from Avranches, France, at 21:34 UTC on December 20, 2010. The space station, of course, is much closer to the camera than the moon is, and is moving at 7.5 km/s relative to the ground, the upshot of which is that this photograph was only possible for the 0.55 seconds it took the ISS to pass in front of the moon. Monsieur Legault knew that, in advance, planned for it, and got the shot.

The second, even more remarkable photograph, shows a double partial eclipse of the sun, most obviously by the moon, to lower left, but also, again, by the ISS. The small dark spot to lower right is a sun spot larger than the Earth itself. This photograph was only possible for a 0.86 second window at 9:09 UTC on January 4th, 2011, from Muscat, Oman. Again, Legault carefully planned to be in exactly the right place, at exactly the right time, and got the shot.

Sooooo close

UPPER DARBY, Pa. (CBS) – Police in Upper Darby were able to make a high-tech arrest by utilizing technology inside the same cell phone that a suspect had stolen from a homeowner.

The incident began when suspect Tyrell Booker allegedly broke into a home on Lamport Road at about 4 a.m. Monday and stood over the bed of the frightened victim.

Investigators say Booker forced his way into home and stole the victim’s cell phone before fleeing.

Unbeknownst to Booker, the cell phone was equipped with a Lookout GPS tracking device.

Approximately an hour after the robbery, the victim and investigators used laptops to track down Booker inside a home where he was hiding.

“We actually followed the phone to the house where the guy that committed the crime lived,” Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said.

Tsk.  Too bad it was the cops that caught him and not the Hell's Angels or skin-headed nazis.   Now THOSE guys know how to mete out the punishment. Oh well, maybe next time.  I wish there were more stories of people catching burglars in the act and beating them retarded with baseball bats. (If you're about to comment on my use of the word "retarded" --- don't be retarded.)

A federal jury will be asked to decide whether it is acceptable for an African American person, but not a white person, to use the "n" word in a workplace.

U.S. District Judge R. Barclay Surrick has ruled that former Fox29 reporter-anchor Tom Burlington's lawsuit against the station, claiming a double standard and alleging that he was the victim of racial discrimination, may go to trial. However, Surrick denied Burlington's claim of a hostile work environment.

Burlington, who is white, was fired after using the "n" word during a June 2007 staff meeting at which reporters and producers were discussing reporter Robin Taylor's story about the symbolic burial of the word by the Philadelphia Youth Council of the NAACP.

Burlington, who began work at the station in 2004 and is now working as a real estate agent, was suspended within days and fired after an account of the incident was published in the Philadelphia Daily News. He alleges that he "was discriminated against because of his race," according to court documents. He claims in his lawsuit that at least two African American employees at Fox29 had used the word in the workplace and were not disciplined.

Do you have any thoughts on the matter? Any thoughts on the utility of saying "N-word" instead of "nigger?"  Any thoughts on how stupid people are to dwell on this "word" as if  some magic is going to happen and race relations will be all fixed if the word is never used again?  Any thoughts on the vapidity of those who believe that racists won't still be using and thinking it even if it's banned?

How about any thoughts on the company's freedom to hire and fire whomever it wants, WHENEVER it wants?  I notice that the loss of freedom is taken for granted these days and nobody so much as peeps about it anymore.

Even though the outcome of this "trial" should be obvious, anyone want to hazard a guess as to the result of this trial?  I've seen plenty of trial results that don't extend freedom but restrict it instead.

That certainly clears things up, doesn’t it? This report, which is a translation from Iranian television, tells you everything you need to know about the Iranian regime and its worldview:

“Iran’s Press TV reported that Hizbullah said that the January 1 attack on the church in Alexandria, Egypt, in which 21 people were killed, is in the interests of Israel and the U.S.

Citing the Lebanese Naharnet, Press TV reported that the movement said on January 1 that the attack ‘comes as part of the most dangerous conspiracies aimed at religious diversity,’ and added that the intrigues were targeting ‘more than one Arab and Muslim country.’

The attacks were meant ‘to serve the Zionist scheme in occupied Palestine and the American scheme aimed at fragmenting our Arab and Islamic countries,’ Hizbullah said.

In a January 2 article, Press TV stated that the Mossad was behind the church bombing, saying that although ‘at first glance, the finger is pointed at extremist Wahabi or Salafi groups, it goes without saying that no Muslim, whatever their political leanings may be, will ever commit such an inhumane act.’”

WTF?

A Florida doctor looking to relieve some holiday stress was killed by her mechanical neck massager, police said.

Michelle Ferrari-Gegerson of Parkland finished wrapping presents in her bedroom on Christmas Eve, authorities say, when she apparently decided to use an electrical massager on her neck.

"The massager got entangled with a necklace, and it probably caused her to black out very quickly," said Jim Leljedal of the Broward County Sheriff's Department.

Ferrari-Gegerson’s husband, Kenneth, came home and found her unconscious with the neck massager next to her body. He called for help, but the 37-year-old was pronounced dead shortly afterwards. Authorities have not revealed which brand of neck massager was used.

Ferrari-Gegerson was an associate professor at the University of Florida and worked in the emergency room at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

This is a representation of a device I imagine could have been the culprit.

Helpful Neighborhood Klown - Sunrise/Sunset Times

Well, a couple of weeks ago we passed the winter solstice and that set me to thinking.

I started getting curious about just exactly what that meant.  For example, do the days get longer but perhaps (at first) the sun comes up a little later and then goes down later also ... rather than meaning the sun starts coming up earlier on that day and going down later?  Anyway, before I got brain damage, I looked it up and made some charts.   It didn't help ... I saw that little hitch in sunset times the last six-eight weeks of the year ... I don't capisky it.  It keeps getting light later every day but it switches around on the sunset ... getting darker earlier each day until the first week in December and then it begins to stay light longer ... and that's before the winter solstice ... weird ... I can't even think about it.

If the charts make your eyes bleed I also included a simple spreadsheet.  Note: Daylight savings time begins the second Sunday in March and ends the first Sunday in November.

In addition to that, I included some graphical info about the direction of sunrise/sunsets for our area.  You can go here if you want to make the map more accurate for your area.  It's pretty simple -- you just drag the little pin to wherever you want.  Good job on this site by NOAA.

Maybe we need a Muslim version of The Cosby Show.

I know that sounds crazy, I know that sounds crazy. But The Cosby Show did so much to change attitudes about African-Americans in this country, and I think sometimes people are afraid of what they don’t understand…

But wait, Katie. We thought the liberal position was that racial relations are still terrible in this evil, racist country.

Maybe what we really need is a Muslim version of Chico & The Man. And maybe a Muslim version of Charlie Chan.

You know how the "news jourrrrrnalists" are always quoting polls?  And every day they're coming out with the results of some poll that are diam-ass-etrically opposed to common sense? 

Oh yes, they imply that "everyone else thinks this way and you should do, you dog-eared freak."  And you think to yourself "What a crock of shit ... who is dumb enough to buy this? ... how come nobody ever polls me or my friends?"

Well, here's your chance, weedhoppers ... sign up to take Zogby polls.  They send me about one a month and it takes about five minutes.  Some of the questions are a crackup ... "Do you consider yourself to be a NASCAR fan?"   "How often do you shop at Walmart?"  Gee, I wonder what the purpose of this is, don't you?  Surely they aren't trying to say that NASCAR fans & Walmart shoppers are both dumb and vote conservative ... or are they?

Gee, I wonder what effect that has on actual dumb people?  I'd hazard a guess and say it makes them reluctant to admit they are conservative ... or that they voted for a Republican.   This is the way polling (with the help of the media) influences the government and gets more votes for the "Democratics."  I mean, dumb people usually prove their intelligence by going along with the mob ... and we all know how smart mobs are in general ... especially mobs of geniuses who want to push you around.

If this doesn't absolutely convince you the polls are trying to influence (as opposed to measure) the political attitudes of Americans then nothing will.  Now, ask yourself, given that an idiot like Evil Klown can determine this, what are the chances that jourrrrrnalists would detect just such anomalies?  Given that the random genious jourrrrnalist would easily detect this foul play, what are the chances he would hide his findings?  Further, what are the chances he would report the discrepancies on the news and then hound the ever-loving-you-know-what out of the polling organization until they ceased the unethical behavior?

Yes, I think the chances are 100% that an ethical journalist who really wanted to inform his audience would report on this next-to-criminal misrepresentation.  But that's not what happens, is it?  If it weren't for me, would you even know about this kind of crap in polling?  Or would you just suspect (as you probably have all along) that polls are bullshit ... and that, in fact, you could probably assume that the results of any given "poll" is probably going to be 180 degrees opposed to common sense your views.

Do they ever tell you that the participants in these "polls" are about 75% Democratic geniuses and 15% Republicans, and 10% "Independents.?" (Ok, that's a slight exaggeration but you get the idea.)  Gee, I wonder why the media won't "disclose" that info.  Actually, I don't wonder.  The reason they don't disclose it is because then you might use your pea-brain to come to a different conclusion than they are trying to lead you to ... and we simply can't have that, now can we?

See, anyone can sign up for these polls ... and right now the "participants" are mostly your university professors and their students ... Greenpeace employees ... labor union members ... you get the idea. 

So ... if you're as sick of hearing bullshit poll results as I think you are, then go here and sign up to be a participant (and invite your friends.)  Of course, if we were successful in signing up a lot of conservatives to take polls, the media would just elect to ignore the results.  That's right, they'd just stop quoting the latest idiocy on their "reports" ... and that would be fine with me.

How Stupid ARE you?

Do you keep voting for "Democratics" because they care about the poor and the environment?  Do you HATE the ReTHUGlicans because they're for the evil rich and evil corporations?  Sweet, you're a genius and you think like me.

You know what I like best about the genius Democratics?  I like how they block oil drilling.  I like how they fight it tooth and nail at EVERY opportunity.  I like how Obama blocked drilling in the gulf ... that's right, just blocked it.  When will it open again?  Nobody knows.  What will happen to the people who worked in that industry? Nobody knows.  But that's not what's important.  The important thing is we've got our boots on the throat of the evil oil companies.

But if you're a good lib, you know that "BIG OIL" isn't the only evil energy corporation out there ... no, no, far from it ... don't forget COAL ... EVIL, FILTHY, DISGUSTING COAL ... WE MUST STOP IT.

Meanwhile, here's my electric bill since 2004.  How is yours? This is quite the mystery, no?  Who could have predicted this?  Well, it can't continue for long, right?

You know who's causing the financial hardships of the country?  That's right ... it's evil corporations.  Evil corporations are making big profits and laughing at you during this recession.  THEY were the ones (behind the scenes, of course) that caused the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac fiasco.  THEY were the ones spending our country into oblivion and breaking the back of America.  THEY are the ones writing ridiculous-ass environmental regulations and REQUIRING themselves ... voluntarily ...  to spend ridiculous amounts of money to comply.  Yes, money they could have spent on hiring people and making more money went instead to applying selfless and altruistic handcuffs to themselves.

Year after year they've increased the demands on themselves  THEY were the ones harping constantly about global warming and throwing billions of your tax money at any jackass (Al gore) who claimed to have a plan to combat it.  Yes, I know congress actually did it but these evil companies no doubt encouraged ... or even bribed them to do so.

So as time goes by, don't forget where your anger should be placed ... squarely on the shoulders of the evil rich and evil corporations ... you know ... just like the media has been telling you for decades.  Yes, it seems to me the time for pitchforks approacheth.

You know, when you think about it, this hasn't just started recently.  How long has this been going on?  What percentage of your life does this amount of time represent?  Are you young?  Do you think this will pass and that soon evil corporations will stop being the bane of your existence?

Are you old and see that this has been getting worse and worse over your lifetime and it's never going to stop now?  Do you further see how the evil corporations have stolen your freedom  (and a great deal of your money) for life ... and that it's too late now to get it back?  Well, it might be too late for you ... but what about your kids and grandkids?

How stupid are you?

So you're coasting along on the interwave ... doing your daily reading or what have you ... when what do you notice? Why it seems to be an out-of-place comment or statement. You discount it and move on ... only to find another similar comment/statement lurking elsewhere.

Upon further investigation you find the comment contains a link to a commercial site ... that's right, it's a ruse ... a come-on ... a HO-AX. So, of course you blow it off because ... "what kind of REPUTABLE company does this sort of thing?" You know, just like anyone with a half a brain would do.

Thinking a little more you may start to wonder "Just how ethical is a company the misleads and tricks its customers? How do they make money? There aren't enough people stupid enough to fall for that." But really, you don't think much further than that because, what's the sense in it ... you'd NEVER buy anything from a company like that, right?

Now, you have to correct yourself. If you really think there aren't enough stupid people for them to make a profit, I have to ask you, when's the last time you deleted an email claiming that someone had some money for you. Believe me, there are PLENTY of morons out there who will fall for this tack.

Ok, now that we've proven that the only ones to fall for this are morons, let's think further. If you own the company and some moron has clicked your link, you might as well go ahead and charge 10 times the going prices, right? "Oh-oh, better not ... the moron might catch on ... oh wait ... he won't catch on ... HE'S A MORON ... WHEW ... WHAT A RELIEF."

Hey, any o' you morons need some sound equipment?  Look into these babies.  Quick, they won't last at these prices ... plus ... look at the pretty colors ... shiny ... spawkowee.

I went to their site and clicked the "contact me" button.  I left them a choice note.  Now I'm going to look for their comment spam ... and wherever I find it, I'm going to leave a comment about how overpriced they are ...  and about how anyone who buys from them is an idiot.

Look, at all the names they're using ... Kobe Bryant, Lady Gaga, Miles Davis ... well, if THEY'RE involved, this MUST be a good product.  Only an idiot would fail to see the implications here.

I'll give them another tried and true idea for hammering imbeciles.  They ought to ban the sale of their products to dumb people.  They ought to require people to swear online (under penalty of  law) that their IQ is over 120 before they qualify to purchase these products.  THAT would cut down on the ripoff of poor, poor morons /sarc.

They seem to have replaced "God" with "Government" in scriptural phrases such as "love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind." (Matthew 22:37)

In 2009, the Obamas gave 5.9 percent of their income to charity, about the same as they gave in 2006 and 2007. In the eight years before he became president, Obama gave an average of 3.5 percent of his income to charity, upping that to 6.5 percent in 2008.

The Obamas' charitable giving is equally divided between "hope" and "change."

George W. Bush gave away more than 10 percent of his income each year he was president, as he did before becoming president.

Thus, in 2005, Obama gave about the same dollar amount to charity as President George Bush did, on an income of $1.7 million -- more than twice as much as President Bush's $735,180. Again in 2006, Bush gave more to charity than Obama on an income one-third smaller than Obama's.

MIAMI – Five young men who died of carbon monoxide poisoning in a South Florida motel room were constant companions ...

They were celebrating a birthday Sunday night when they were overcome by carbon monoxide from a car they left running in a garage under their motel room, police said. The teens' friends told police that the car was having engine trouble, and they had probably left it running so that they wouldn't get stuck with a car that wouldn't start, police spokesman Carl Zogby said.

The group's car was found running in a closed garage underneath the room. A door to a staircase up to the room had been left open, and high levels of carbon monoxide were found inside, Zogby said.

Authorities identified the dead as Juchen C. Martial, 19; Peterson Nazon, 17; Jonas Antenor, 17; Jean Pierre Ferdinand, 16; and Evans Charles, 19. All lived within blocks of each other in Miami's Little Haiti neighborhood.  Well, let's see ... a bunch of teenagers alone in a motel room ... sure, that's sounds perfectly natural ... nothing unusual at all ... to a brain-dead lib.

The group rented the room Sunday around 9 p.m. to celebrate Martial's 19th birthday. Yes, because there we can pretend to be grown ups doing grown up things.  We can't celebrate a birthday at home like normal people ... we're too good for that ... besides, we'd have adult supervision and that'd be such a downer.

Martial's family had celebrated his birthday on Christmas Day and had gone to church on Sunday, and they didn't know he was going out later that evening, said his aunt, Magalie Martial.  What's this?  Their little angel neglected to tell them anything?  Probably just an oversight.  I know that when I was a teenager going to spend overnight in a motel room with my friends, it may have easily slipped my mind and I may have forgotten to inform my dad.  And ... if that ever DID happen, believe me when I tell you that carbon monoxide would have been the much gentler way to go.

I'm exaggerating of course but I need to tell you that would have been such a serious offense at my house that, had I been 19, I'd have been kicked out permanently.   My dad just didn't stand for that kind of crap ... at all.  He was what the libs might call an "authoritarian."  He made us kids follow rules and there was punishment involved if you failed to follow them ... and I'm not talking about some namby-pamby "time-out" either.  As it is, I left home at 17 ... you know ... cuz I wanted to make my own rules.)  Libs don't think of that.  They want to stay at home and not follow the rules ... they're too good for rules.  The don't like being oppressed.

Nazon's family said they had seen one of the teens driving the car just before Christmas. When the car showed up in news reports after the five bodies were found Monday, Nazon's mother knew something was wrong. She had been calling her youngest child's phone all morning, but he never answered.  All morning?  What about all last night?  I guess the jourrrrrnalist didn't feel it was necessary to "delve" into this area.  I mean, what would be the purpose?  After all, someone might get the idea it was THEIR FAULT!  Someone might get the feeling that they're a loser.  See, I want to know why the cops weren't out looking for these kids the night before.

Immacula Antenor came to the Nazons' home to share their grief, but she found it hard to talk about her son, Jonas. She softly described the group as "good boys," and both women shrugged at the idea of them throwing a party in a hotel room.  "Both women shrugged at the idea of them them throwing a party in a hotel room"  ... as in "what's the big deal?"  And THIS is the classic case of the liberal being unable to learn ... to cognificate ... to capisky.  So brainwashed is the lib that he must always think the way the media tells him ... the way his lib friends think ... he must NEVER veer from this path, lest his friends think him insane.  Ever notice that libs never argue with each other?  They're too busy acknowledging each others' genius to have any meaningful discussion.  Meanwhile, conservatives argue amongst themselves all the time ... but that discussion is for another day and  post.

Nazon and Antenor had not told their mothers much about their plans, except to ask to borrow some cash. Martial was "a sweet boy, not a bad boy," and there was no reason to worry, Nazon's mother said.  Yeah ... "Hey mom, gimmee some cash and don't ask any of your stupid assed questions, you got me?  I'll be home when I damn well feel like it."

"Five people came to celebrate a birthday," Immacula Nazon said. "Now they're victims."  Yes ... VIC-TIMS ... GAAAAA ... nobody could have predicted this .... what a cruel, CRUEL twist of fate ... totally out of the blue.  WE MUSN'T BLAME OURSELVES!!!

This is just another example of the libs abusing language.  They're constantly engaged in hyperbole ... except, they actually believe their own bulls**t.  "Victims?"  They called these kids "victims" and the jourrrrrnalist doesn't question it.  Why doesn't the jourrrrnalist question it?  Hey, the answer might make someone feel bad ... plus, you have no real need to know the answer ... you might learn something.  Besides, if you're thinking the way we want you to, the question will never occur to you anyway.
