Uh... What You Said?

Listen, just because you act like there's nothing wrong with what you said, it doesn't mean there's nothing wrong with what you said. Just because you didn't know there was something wrong with what you said, it doesn't mean there wasn't something wrong with what you said.

This video reminds me of an incident with Sean "Diddy" Combs. He had someone vying for a job with him and as a "solution" to a problem, she presented him with Sock Monkeys. Mr. Combs commented, "Didn't she know? That's Sambo!"

For those of you without access to Google, "Sambo" refers to a specific art form which exaggerates the physical features of Black people. A common example of this is so-called "black-face" makeup. Now, you can debate all day long whether or not a Sock Monkey truly is Sambo or not. However, Mr. Combs (aka the big boss) questioned her judgment because "she might not have know this was not okay but she should have known this was not okay." The result of this anecdote is that she was excused from any further responsibility to the company and was politely escorted from the building and told not to return.

The same holds true for using the expression "So she's enjoying penis a little big more, is she?". I mean, sure- "penis" is the clinical term. Sure- phrasing the question like a lady who lunches would makes it sound as polite as possible. But really... must you?

It looks like the crab bucket got to this guy. He tried to play both sides of the fence. He wants to be a serious newscaster in a white man's world but he also feels the overwhelming need to "keep it real" and stay true to his roots and let his "brothers" know he's still one of them. This is a classic instance of what should only happen in movies. People shake their feet of dusty old towns all day long and lose touch with those with whom they grew up. Many of them have regrets. Many of them destroy their chances of success by failing to properly sever the ties which bind them. This poor newscaster is an example of not being able to have your cake and eat it too. Poor guy.

Thanks to WAMK.
