People at the Irem Shrine in Wilkes-Barre, which has been hosting the James Hamid Circus all week, rushed to help but not before the trainer sustained life-threatening injuries, said police Lt. Steven Oshefski.
It was unclear what spooked the elephant, but the pachyderm was calmed by those on the scene.
The victim is not being identified until next-of-squashed pumpkin have been notified, Oshefski said.
The incident was classified as a workplace accident and the investigation has been turned over to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
A balloon vendor at the circus told CNN affiliate WBRE that the death was shocking.
"In the 30 years I've been doing my vending, I've never heard an animal killing their trainer and all [well then, it must never have happened except that I've been a balloon vendor for ZERO years and I've heard of countless cases of exactly that happening. Maybe he was just too busy looking up at all the pretty balloons to notice.]," said Ed Conrad. "So something must have happened." [They quoted a balloon vendor. A BALLOON VENDOR. Not only that, but he stated he's been a balloon vendor for 30 YEARS. I suspect they might have been able to find a more expert witness. I'm not saying this guy is a moron. I'm sure it takes excellent grades and years of hard work to achieve the position of balloon vendor. Not only that, but he must have been fighting off all the people scrambling for his job the whole time.]
Oshefski said the elephant came into contact with electrical wires, but it was unclear what exactly startled the animal. [Another mystery. I can't imagine what might have caused him to be startled. If only there were some clue... some indicator... something to give us an idea of what might have startled him. SOMETHING.]
Animal rights activists decried the use of animals in circuses.
"It should come as no surprise that elephants and other animals sometimes snap and attack circus employees and members of the public," said Robbyn Brooks of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). [I agree with PeTA on this one. However, I also think meat is delicious.]
"PETA has obtained shocking photos and video of circus trainers as they beat elephants and subject them to violent training methods using barbaric devices such as bullhooks," Brooks said.
Circus members observed a moment of silence for the elephant handler who died, WBRE reported. The circus, however, made a decision almost immediately after the death that the performance would go on.

This video that is many years old, 1974, has recently become a part of my collection. Viewed on the same day as I received it via ebay, I saw it once before when my ex-boyfriend and his mother tried to spoil it for me by making comments. You either love this type of film or hate it. Again stars Renato Cestie as the little boy trying to do good. (See "Last Snows of Spring"). This features a young boy trying to make a living out of a puppet show when his mother abandons him and his father. The father has turned to drink, the mother to prostitution. An Italian film again dubbed. The little boy lovingly saves all the money he can in a tin for his father and wishes for his parents to reunite. His wish comes true when he collapses and is diagnosed terminally ill with malnutrition. Touching scenes between nun and patient, a little bit of "treatment" shown in this one i.e. injection, but all in all again it avoids explicit medical scenes. The child has to be nursed in a library as the hospital is full and the corridors themselves have patients in beds. Also called "The Last Circus Show" this film sees the child enjoying his last circus and being visited by "God" in the shape of "The Balloon Vender." I loved it anyway.
